The only people who thinks this looks good are the Valve fanboys who love everything they do.
yes, logical fallacies are the best arguments
I'm genuinely interested in seeing how a controller like this would work, the image above on this page shows the hand gripping onto the controller nicely and the thumbs aren't restricted or even lacking any space at all. As for the design, I think it looks pretty cool.
Or 2013 if you are lucky.
Personally, I'm not signing up for the beta because frankly I'm never going to use the system.
I really like think about the possibilities that this thing would offer in terms of input. There are just so more things that can be done by having touch pads on which you can move around freely. Also if they get their haptic feedback thing right, it might simulate a proper analog stick pretty good.
I can see this controller not working well with games like GTA especially since you have to tap the bottom button to sprint.
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/201195/Select_game_developers_used_the_Steam_Controller_Heres_what_they_said.php
So far, Tabar has no word on when game developers will be able to get their hands on Steam Controllers so they can start making optimized games with them. But he did explain what he found out about it while there. He said areas on the trackpad can be configured to have multiple button inputs. For example, the very top edge of a trackpad can be mapped to the keyboard's Shift+W, making your character in a first-person game run. Tabar said the configuration map for the controller allows you to do "pretty much anything." For example, developers can slice up a pad into quarters, each one representing a different input, or even into eight radial sections, again, each section representing whatever you want, mapping to key combinations, or to the mouse.

Where are ergonomics when your extending your thumb across the entire controller just to press a button? A button that's in a square formation so there is no up, down, left, right? Only four corners along the entirety of the middle of the controller? Don't tell me to shut up unless you know what you're talking about.
you must have some real tiny fucking hands dude [t]http://offtherecordsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Jimmy-Clausen1.jpg[/t] or are just trying to shit post
If it proves me wrong then it proves me wrong. It still appears to me like a useless piece of shit, though. I'll stick to a mouse and keyboard, thanks.
I have an MMO mouse and gamepad and hate controllers but that doesn't mean I think it's shit lmao [editline]28th September 2013[/editline] you haven't even used it, so yes, you should shut it. You can't say shit about most controllers when you haven't even experienced how they actually function or seen any reviews at all.
I have large hands and played in CAL on CS:S with a trackpad, shut the hell up.
this is the funniest thing i've ever read
You don't even need to use it to see it's flaws. Just LOOK at it. That is some of the most abysmal button placements since the CD-i controller.
Watch it feel comfortable and have accurate sensitivity and this guy look like a total ass for overreacting without having a clue.
I read a review by the Dev for Super Meat boy someone posted somewhere earlier. He's pretty much wrong, and it's still just the beta controller. :v:
So the tracking's based on like, placing your thumb in the centerish and then it tracks the direction that the thumb moves from there, like a digital version of the psp analog nub or a physical version of a touchscreen analog "stick"? That sounds p good tbh i'll have to try out the buttons before i decide if i like it but they don't look too great

The touch pads can be used like the buttons on a controller too, they don't have to be like a joystick.
This actually looks really comfortable to use, especially if they tactile feedback's done right. I can't wait to sit back on my couch and play some Civ 5 on my TV with it.
I've used all sorts of game pads and controllers. But, I prefer my mouse. and hell, if there's usb ports on it, my wireless mouse will be fine for the job. now this is something you people never think about: This is great for precise placement. Your mouse jitters, after 15 minutes of trying to place something, and bam, you have to do it all over again. These little beauties on Thinkpads are the best thing for KSP and some parts of Gmod. So precise, doesn't move. Simple. FPS's, though, are completely impossible. I prefer an early 2000s usb microsoft mouse for those. On track with the post, though, it looks really nice. I would use it happily.
SteamBox and Steam Controller is like a godsend for someone like me who cant afford jack shit. Assuming they're the price of a console, that is. I hope. Please.

why are people saying that this wouldn't work for fighting games? aside from the lack of buttons on the right side, the trackpad would be way more precise than an analog thumbstick. i can't be the only person around that has an issue in games like street fighter where the input for hadoken (|, \, --, punch, a quarter circle) gets messed up with the one for shoryuken (--, |, \, punch, same as above but starting from the side) while playing with a pad. i believe the trackpad actually would give you more precise input options than any thumbstick while feeling notably easier on the thumbs, i suppose I don't have to remind anybody of the phrase "blistered thumbs", hell i'm a lot more concerned about the lack of buttons really, which will limit its usefulness.

Or a radial dial. Or a lot of things.
I've heard those are good, but I never liked them. Guess they're an acquired skill.
They are good, when the need arises. They're rather amazing, actually. but, thinkpads really aren't gaming computers. This thing, with the right accelerated drivers on an intel GMA950, is really nice. I can play Source Engine games smoothly, at low res, of course. Not much else...
I've heard those are good, but I never liked them. Guess they're an acquired skill.
Sorry for the raite, missed the reply button D: My dad had one of the first thinkpads which only had these nippels and no trackpad, so that's how I learned it. For normal windows use I find them way better than trackpads since they give you good feedback and you never have to put your finger away from they like you would with a trackpad. They really give you great precision.
Because they work. There was absolutely no need to get rid of them. They're thinking with their wallets instead of their brains.
Because if it's total shit so many people will buy it, right :v:
You want to know why people like analog sticks? Because they work. There was absolutely no need to get rid of them. They're thinking with their wallets instead of their brains.
That doesnt make any sense whatsoever. Wouldnt KEEPING analog sticks be thinking with their wallets instead of their brain?
I don't see why people don't have trust in Valve? I mean they might have bumpy starts (steam), but I feel that everything they do is heavily researched and considered for the audience. I mean fuck they're making an open source console with an open source controller. An OPEN SOURCE CONTROLLER. How dope is that? Pretty dope.
because it's not episode 3
Launch title for the steam box???? imma genius

I'm trusting in them because it seems like they decided to throw away previous controller design aspects (like the two-analog stick and ABXY diamond design), think about what would work that nobody's really thought to put in a controller, and play-tested the shit out of it. Valve wouldn't be announcing this thing if they weren't confident in their design.
