Portal's tie-in wasn't forced at all, the only tie-in is mentions how Aperture science is a rival of Black Mesa, there's nothing else in any Portal games that reference the Half-Life universe.
It's more of the fact that half-life's story and portals story kind of contrast with each other in ways when you place both back storys together in the same world. For instance how was cave able to obtain all these insanely genius scientists and engineers to develop a fucking portal gun prototype in the 50's, when Black Mesa even when funded by the government was unable to control teleportation technology in the 2000's with apparently some of the most highly regarded scientists. Their backstorys just don't mesh well together in my opinion, and the whole borealis thing being an aperture boat seems forced and unnescessary like the rest of the cross references. They would have been better off being in their own world with their own lore. it would have saved us from trying to place these two games together in the same world with logic. Now I know they don't really contradict each other THAT much, but it still seems like a unnescessary idea and I would have preferred it to be on their own.
people give valve too much credit lol hl2 wasn't even that good compared to hl1

HL3/EP3 will be bad because they don't have Kelly Bailey on music or Viktor Antonov on art it's all gone to hell.
HL3/EP3 will be bad because they don't have Grace Kelly on music or Viktor Antonov on art it's all gone to hell.
Don't you mean Kelly Bailey on music?
Waiting for Source 2: Episode 1 Engine.
Don't you mean Kelly Bailey on music?
Probably, I cant ever really remember his name sadly enough.
It's time!
It's Valve time!
ftfy
Probably, I cant ever really remember his name sadly enough.
Don't worry, while kelly bailey was a fucking genius in sound design and composition (even though he sampled stock sounds and other works a shit ton, maybe even too much at times) he has been replaced by Mike Morasky who did tf2, l4d, and portal 1 and 2 in terms of composition. I am not sure who does sound design anymore however I am sure they take Kelly Bailey in high regard as a reference to get the feel of half-life in terms of sound.
I actually want a ricochet 2 that game was so much fun
that was more or less an easter egg since it has no relevance to the storyline established in the portal universe
the point is Portal takes place in the HL universe, even if you don't need to understand HL to understand Portal and vice versa
I thought it was well know portal and half life existed in the same universe. Someone even made a full timeline that puts everything in order. It's older than portal 2 though so it obviously excludes it. Portal 2 isn't really canon since it takes place forever after everything else.
HL3/EP3 will be bad because they don't have Kelly Bailey on music or Viktor Antonov on art it's all gone to hell.
Victor Antonov left a little before or after HL2: Episode 1 and Kelly Bailey did only half of Episode 2's music, if I remember correctly.
I want to know more about that stars of barathrum.
When Valve says Ricochet 2 they mean Half Life 3. It's not the first time they mentioned Ricochet 2.
and when they say Half-Life 3 they mean Half-Life 2: Episode 3
Probably, I cant ever really remember his name sadly enough.
rip grace kelly, vavle will never be the same without her
HL3/EP3 will be bad because they don't have Kelly Bailey on music or Viktor Antonov on art it's all gone to hell.
Wouldn't say their current team is doing that bad if you judge the music and art direction in Portal 2. I'm sure they'll be able to pull off something with its own qualities.
HL3/EP3 will be bad because they don't have Kelly Bailey on music or Viktor Antonov on art it's all gone to hell.
I once sent an email to Mike Morasky (current Soundtrack composer) and asked him, since Kelly left Valve, if he would go into the same direction in music as he did or making an entire new direction for the Half Life games and he replied: "I would love for the opportunity to work with Kelly Bailey again, he is a friend and a fine musician." And I think I read somewhere that there is possibility that he "could" return to compose music for the Half Life soundtrack. About Viktor, well he already left Valve before Episode 1 and 2 came out and I think the other concept artists did get influenced a bit by his work as seeing how Ep1 and 2 turned out. Not as dark as HL2, but a consequently developed direction to deliver some new environments, while maintaining a darker story tone, especially in Ep2. And Gabe said that the next Half Life would be more frightening and darker maybe like the first concept arts of Half Life 2 before they changed so much, so I think they won't have many problems. They also have/had a long ass time (and still have) to develop as many possible directions for the next Half Life game. So I wouldn't worry that much. Moreover, since Viktor is done with Dishonored and HL3 would be again a huge game like HL2 (as he stated that he likes to work on big projects) he could also return to be an art director.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/half-life-3-wait-explained-6372687 uhh
Newell laughed at this, and spoke of Ricochet 2, a title not likely in development, and more believably a code name for Half-Life 3.
rev up those rainbows
I am going to laugh so hard when it really is Ricochet 2. Gaben will be my favourite troll in the world.
THE SECOND BOX: Ricochet 2 Half-Life: Opposing Force 2 Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Part 2
THE SECOND BOX: Ricochet 2 Half-Life: Opposing Force 2 Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Part 2
Don't forget Dota 2 and Day of Defeat 2.
Looking at all games with two in them, I think Valve just wants to have everything ready for when they one day, their games get a three in them. Or it's just that their unlucky number is three and they want to avoid it

This news is exhilarating.
Or they can't count to three
Let's see, I saw a video with a spy telling a scout the cake is his mother. Then Gabe comes in eatin' the cake, then making an Episode NINE (Episode one and two as a sum, multiply that with the currently three HL2 games and we get Nine) Gabe: Bye bye, fuck you Spy
I don't see why they wouldn't make it. It's a pretty small game idea that's not that large of a project and would be a good way to show off / learn the new engine for low cost.
Besides, someone at Valve said that HL2: EP3 would contain horror. If it's gonna contain Amnesia references I wouldn't be surprised if a Gatherer/Servant/Grunt would go "Boo!" from a vent

Obvious references shoved in your face like that aren't Valve's style.
