The only reason to buy a steam machine is if you like how the box looks, or don't care to put together your own.
So then why not just focus on SteamOS which is actually doing more? Why do they need to build thier own box, how does this help with the Videogame industry, how does this help console gaming or PC gaming?
How does this help? All you're saying is "well options" which are great to have. But having options for the SAKE of options is not good.
As long as games exist on the PC, somebody will try to mod them.
It would be beneficial for everybody to make modding and using mods easier.
For the TONS of people who don't know how / don't want to put together their own??? are you thick?
The point is to aim at console/casual players who don't PC game because it's not very simple, and the steam box is a mostly simple solution for them.
Then why not buy a fucking tower? Seriously, I'm not thick. I'm seeing the steam box as a redundant choice.

Because premades are overpriced pieces of shit. They're exactly the thing that gives PC gaming the reputation of being expensive.

Because it's smaller?

Look at how big it is!
I'll confess my PC was custom built by someone else because I literally was scared about breaking something and as a result I had 2 years warranty on it and I'm still using it
You can't blame people for thinking that or even me, I'm not that smart with components of computers and I always fear I'll break something, which is why steam machine will be perfect for people who want a proper PC gaming experience and if they want to experiment they can without any punishment
