• Carmack: Nothing exciting about Windows 8
Everything is improved in Windows 8. How is that for a reason. And upgrading it was what? 40 bucks? Less than a game.
You say that as if it's a fact. Well enjoy everything being better then.
You say that as if it's a fact. Well enjoy everything being better then.
Uh, well, yes, it is a fact. Someone made a good list about the most important improvements in W8 in another thread but I'm not going to bother finding it. But as you would expect the whole OS is more optimized and tweaked. It boots way fucking faster and it supports ISO file formats without any need for third party applications. But for specifics I have none to give. But just stop being a XP person clinging to outdated shit with no real basis for doing so. Give W8 a good try and if you experience it as fucking terrible then go back to W7. You've got nothing to lose, but everything to win.
I wish Windows wasn't trying to attract a bigger audience by overdecorating their operating system.
I've been using XP until this summer, guess it's gonna be the same with 7.
But why would I want a search menu to open in fullscreen?
I'm not saying that it isn't a compromise between desktop and tablet users, but when people use the search, they generally focus on the search field and not much else. Before someone was talking about wasted space, this is, in most cases the contrary - it shows a lot more, simply because it uses up the whole thing. [editline]5th August 2012[/editline]
Not everyone has little in their Start Menu. And I don't fucking want anything fancy covering up my whole screen slugging down my workflow. I avoid Macintosh for a reason. Why couldn't they give us a Start Screen AND A START MENU?
I'm not saying that this the perfect solution for everyone, but sorry: you're a minority. Microsoft is tailoring an OS to a huge market, and their data shows that most people simply pin programs to the super bar instead of using the start menu. I can understand that it's ass for guys like you, but for most people it's an improvement.
I rarely use the start menu anymore. I find it useless.

Why can't they just give us BOTH solutions? Getting to the shut down button takes longer. Searching for something blocks out everything else you were doing. Finding your app forces you to move your cursor all over the screen.
Ugh.. Just look at it though. Dropping the great GUI and interface that they've stuck with for years is a shitty decision and one I hope they regret a great deal so they don't attempt anything stupid like this again years down the line - after reverting to a simple, minimalist interface for Windows 9..
[t]http://resources6.techhamlet.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/windows-8-desktop.jpg[/t] You're right, the entire Windows GUI experience is completely different now. A complete catastrophe. Looks nothing like Windows 7.
Wow, who the hell is rating SGTNAPALM dumb? He made a valid rebuttal to the point that "the entire GUI has been changed".
Wow, who the hell is rating SGTNAPALM dumb? He made a valid rebuttal to the point that "the entire GUI has been changed".
Because he showed a picture of the Desktop when Dgg was talking about the start menu?
Wow, who the hell is rating SGTNAPALM dumb? He made a valid rebuttal to the point that "the entire GUI has been changed".
There's a button for that
Because he showed a picture of the Desktop when Dgg was talking about the start menu?
My bad. When he said "Dropping the great GUI and interface that they've stuck with for years is a shitty decision," I assumed he had meant "The GUI and interface," instead of "Part of the GUI and interface." The parts we most use in day to day operation remain largely unchanged, with only minor aesthetics changes. The desktop is still a desktop, windows are still windows, the taskbar is still a taskbar, and the notification tray is still a notification tray. It has been this way since Windows 95.
Where the fuck is PandaX?
Where the fuck is PandaX?
Hanging out in the real Windows 8 thread in H&S, not this shitty one in The News Node where people who haven't even tried the Release Preview spout off their assumptions.
If I buy a new PC, I'll get Windows 8 with it because it would be silly to buy Windows 7 at that point. Not going to randomly upgrade when there's nothing I can't stand about Windows 7 and my PC is still working.
For fucks sake pack it in. "HURRRR DURRRRR START MENU GOEN." [editline]5th August 2012[/editline] It's functionally identical, if it were not I would be back on windows 7 right now.
HURRRR DURRRR MY OPINION IS THE ONLY RIGHT ONE
Then the correct thing is to do is politely disagree.
No, he was being sarcastic and condescending, thus the correct thing to do is tell him how dumb it is. [editline]5th August 2012[/editline]
Then the correct thing is to do is politely disagree. [editline]5th August 2012[/editline] He is not dumb for pointing out that 99.9999999999999% of your interactions with windows are on the desktop, who gives a shit if it looks tidier when you hit the windows key and type a program name in? It's certainly better looking than this jellyfied, bulging pile of crap.
His/your opinion and experience. I like it the way it is.
It's not an improvement to throw a goddamn search button into a search screen. Like I said. Why can't they just give us BOTH solutions? Finding your app forces you to move your cursor all over the screen.
Ehh, I don't know who would ever use the search button on a desktop - you just start typing. The search button is mainly there for the tablet users.
Ehh, I don't know who would ever use the search button on a desktop - you just start typing. The search button is mainly there for the tablet users.
Uh, the reason they decided to make the start screen is because people on desktop computers have gone from using the menu to using it's search function. With search button I'm talking about the start menu button and search screen is start screen.
people are agreeing with someone who said something they agree with? form your own opinions you sheeple!
NEWS, MAN SAYS SOMETING BAD ABOUT SOME PRODUCT.
I still don't understand why Microsoft won't put an option in the control panel or elsewhere that allows you to revert back to the classic start menu. I shouldn't have to resort to third party applications to do something like that. I have no interest in Metro or the apps that spring forth from it. Hell, I even disabled the gadget bar feature in Windows 7 since I have no use for it. Microsoft provided me with the options to disable that and many other features so why won't they provide me with the same sort of options to disable Metro in Windows 8?

And really - try it out. It's not bad at all.
FOR FUCK'S SAKE IT'S A MENU
Yep - you got it. It no longer served its original purpose, and therefore it was replaced. In my view it's just an alternative and in no way superior to the "classic" start menu, that's why I think they should provide the option. But anyway, no way to please everyone. Microsoft provides the product and if it's not to the consumers taste they go elsewhere.
This is the third developer to bash windows 8 with really shitty reasons - I mean he goes on to say he didn't like vista but then liked windows 7 because of performance enhancements, is he completely fucking oblivious to the massive list of performance enhancements in windows 8? I don't get what happened to carmack, he was one of my heroes but then doom 3 was pretty underwhelming... and then rage was a shitty pc port, what the fuck is he doing. At least he apologized for rage...

This thread feels like Mac vs PC or PS3 versus Xbox.

This thread feels like Mac vs PC or PS3 versus Xbox.
It's not necessarily that I care about windows 8 that much, but every time windows 8 gets brought up it's like the retard jamboree with tonnes of people whining about it for ridiculous reasons, and it seemed ridiculous that he said there was nothing exciting about it yet at the same time said windows 7 was an "attractive" upgrade because of the performance enhancements... and there hasn't been this many enhancements built into a version of windows in a long long time. Still, people are going to bring this up in ridiculous arguments every time something is posted about windows 8 so any interesting posts about new features will be drowned in inane rambling about how metro is being forced on everybody. Basically, it's less about windows 8 and more me being surprised that carmack is doing silly things again, considering I (was?) a big fan of the guy. He did so many amazing things for the industry and it just seems like he's struggling for relevance today
oh, you know, a new market store, new form-factors (tablets, directx on phones). carmack is a programmer yet doesn't know about winrt? or any of the new directx apis? what about directx 10 and 11? no wonder why Rage ran and looked like shit.
DirectX 10 and 11 can be accessed in 7, which is why 7 is the endpoint. COM programming is never really touched during games except on certain occasions, where the reduced overhead can't really be taken advantage of, a centralized store is only attractive on the 360 because it's the only option, and toss me a PM when you see DOOM 4 come out on a phone or tablet.
Bye Metro,hello Classic Shell ;) http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ Don't be so negative about 8.
