Since the PS4 uses an x86 CPU, would that mean that it in theory at least would be possible to install Windows on it? Or am I wrong?
The fucked up memory system would make it a pain.
[editline]22nd February 2013[/editline]
But anything is possible with Linux and some willpower. Windows? Not so much.
Prediction: You can install steam on the PS4
That'd be fucking crazy. I'd definitely want a PS4 if that was the case.

That shit happened 2 years ago.

I've seen Linux run on a AVR microcontroller (which was emulating a weak ARM SoC in order to do so)
I'm surprised nobody has (yet) gene-engineered a plant that could run Linux somehow.
Yesterday, Sony gave a sneak-peek at its next-generation PlayStation®4 (PS4™) game console coming later this year and, here at AMD, we couldn’t be more excited. Bringing a supercharged PC architecture that combines next-gen hardware, software, and the fastest game network in the world. Oh, and this is all powered by a semi-custom designed AMD accelerated processing unit (APU) jointly developed in coordination with Sony!
In fact, the PS4 is the first announced design win based on semi-custom AMD APUs. This further demonstrates our commitment to take AMD technology into adjacent high growth markets as we diversify beyond the PC.
What exactly is a semi-custom APU? Let me elaborate:
At the most basic level, an APU is a single chip that combines general-purpose x86 central processing unit (CPU) cores with a graphics processing unit (GPU) and a variety of system elements, including memory controllers, specialized video decoders, display outputs, etc. Our semi-custom solutions take the same treasure trove of graphics; compute and multi-media IP found in our APUs, and customize them for customers who have a very specific high-volume product that could benefit from AMD’s leading-edge technologies.
In the case of the PS4, we leveraged the building blocks of our 2013 product roadmap – the same technologies you find in the latest AMD APUs powering PCs, ultrathin notebooks and tablets – to create a solution that incorporates our upcoming, low-power AMD “Jaguar” CPU cores with next-generation AMD Radeon™ graphics delivering nearly 2 TFLOPS of compute performance! This unique APU architecture enables game developers to easily harness the power of parallel processing to fundamentally change the console gaming experience. Not only creating the opportunity for new possibilities in software design, but also faster and more fluid graphics.
This is going to be a very exciting year for gamers, especially for those with AMD hardware in their PCs and consoles, as we have even more game-changing (pun intended) announcements still to come.
Hint: Its a 8 core AMD APU. I hope this means multiplatform games will run well on my 8 core cpu.
Truth be told, it is going to rival the PC again in terms of performance for a while (PC remains more powerful, but the console is far more optimized). At least graphically we won't see much of a difference.
Crytek has said that PCs are MUCH MUCH faster than the next gen consoles right now.
Crytek also said Crysis 2 would be a good game.
also ssds die after like 3-4 years
Do you happen to run a defragmenter on your SSD 24/7
It sounds like you're killing it.
Crytek also said Crysis 2 would be a good game.
Crysis 2 was a good game, it just wasn't a good sequel.
Wait, I thought 32bit couldn't use more than 2-4GB of RAM? Is that just a Windows thing?
Wait, I thought 32bit couldn't use more than 2-4GB of RAM? Is that just a Windows thing?
x86 doesn't mean 32-bit, x86 is simply the name for an architecture, an x86 processor could even be 16-bit. It's x86-64, I don't think they even produce 32-bit processors any more.
Basically, Wikipedia.
Crytek has said that PCs are MUCH MUCH faster than the next gen consoles right now.
Yes but that power isn't used to its full extend. I bet we'll see plenty of PS4 games with the exact same graphical effects as the PC versions for a while.
Crytek has said that PCs are MUCH MUCH faster than the next gen consoles right now.
Considering it's speculated to use a gpu that's somewhere in between a 7850 and 7870, I bet that's still more powerful than 80% of gaming PCs out there currently. Remember that those buying high end GPUs or even crossfire/sli setups are a minority. So yeah, while there are much faster options already available, few people can really afford them.
Crytek has said that PCs are MUCH MUCH faster than the next gen consoles right now.
whoa really an open platform where you can stick multiple gpus and cpus into is faster than a closed sub $500 box????
Lets see how much sony spent on crypto this time.
They generated a random number with cards instead of dice this time

:10bux: on they used a deck of UNO playing cards
Most of the hardware will be proprietary, so the answer is "very probably not"
I'd imagine with tons of hacking and driver-writing you could run Linux on it, though, since you could on the PS2 and PS3 (with their special Linux stuff) and on the Xbox, which is also x86.
Hell even the Nintendo DS has Linux
http://www.dslinux.org
But why would you ever want linux on it. It'd defeat the whole purpose of having a console.
But why would you ever want linux on it. It'd defeat the whole purpose of having a console.
A Linux partition to allow it to play more file types/applications and make it a more viable home entertainment console???
But why would you ever want linux on it. It'd defeat the whole purpose of having a console.
I dunno about you, but I'd love to have a sleek lookin' box that could both play Playstation exclusives and do computer-y stuff as well plugged into my TV.
Also, STEAM ON LINUX HINT HINT (yes I know it's only Ubuntu for now)
Actually those are good points, I never thought about it that way. if there'd be DualShock 4 support it'd be even better than having to plugin a keyboard and mouse.
But why would you ever want linux on it. It'd defeat the whole purpose of having a console.
You DO know the difference between consoles and computers are diminishing for every console generation, right?
We're close to reaching a point where the only true limit is a little bit of software and hardware encryption & locking techniques.

No it isn't.

Stop assuming even if sony did have Other OS feature that it would perform decently, the PS3 Other OS had awful driver support in every way possible.
Maybe easier to turn ps4 into portable PC?
Yes but that power isn't used to its full extend. I bet we'll see plenty of PS4 games with the exact same graphical effects as the PC versions for a while.
For a while, then we will be at the same sort of graphics for 4 years, until a new console comes out.
An SSD would bring back the $599 price tag for sure.
more like over 1000

optimization on various games =/= amount of power
