• Older players less interested in competitive games, new study states

This would kind of explain why I prefer to be the guy who makes and sells the stuff other people use in PvP in MMORPGs rather than actually PvP.
The older I get the more competitive I play. I greatly enjoy games where I do nothing, or meet my own goals or enjoy a story, those are all good, but I do quite enjoy an hour or two of competitive games. [editline]15th September 2016[/editline]
I only really had an interest in competitive games between the age of like 15 and 20. I still may play something PvP on occasion like some Overwatch, but not preferably. And I refuse to touch ranked modes.
I can't play non ranked in OW. It's not fun. I like to win and I like to play the meta. Quick play is not good for either in my experience
I like to win in games, but I hate strict meta adherence with an intense, burning passion. Like, the obsession with meta theory-crafting and desire to create rigid gameplay patterns makes me sick to my stomach.
I still play competitive games. But it's more or less limited to BF4 and Dark Souls 3 PvP currently.

I don't care what heroes my team picks, I pick the hero I want to play and play how I want to play. I didn't really touch ranked yet, because I feel like I'll be horrible at it. I like it because you can actually find alot of actually pretty cool people, and it's fun to see the occasional crazy shit unfold. I even have a really high voice for my age, andI haven't actually met many rotten people, and many people who are annoyed with my voice just cue me to keep it to callouts when I get carried away.

Like, the obsession with meta theory-crafting and desire to create rigid gameplay patterns makes me sick to my stomach.
It's not so much a "rigid adherence" or not that bothers me. If I'm on attack, and I haven't picked a character yet and the whole team is this nonsense mishmash of characters that isn't going to work to move on the point or work as a team, I don't enjoy that. Want to play a character you enjoy more because you're probably better with them than the strict "right" choice? Go for it, you're going to play better and have more fun, I'm all down with that. It's the "I'm never going to play anything but _____" or the "I'll never play a _____ type" that bothers me. Before when I only played quick play, I ended up with almost all my playtime on healers and tanks because that's what the team always needed and I ultimately just want to win and enjoy every character in the game so I'll play whoever we need, I didn't enjoy that because in quick play it wouldn't reward me for my effort or consideration of the team. I don't terribly enjoy playing a team based game as a singeplayer game, which I feel is what many do in quick play. I just enjoy the atmosphere in ranked in that particular game more. A game like R6 Siege? I'll stick to casual because that's fun enough as it is. [editline]16th September 2016[/editline] YOU CAN ONLY PLAY WITH THIS GUN OR YOU ARE RETARDED
I view OW as a team game. it's a game for a team to play. I lack the required friends to have 5 other people willing to play the game at all times, so I play solo que or duo que a lot. I don't expect everyone to be 100% communicative or anything, but I enjoy it so much more when people play as a team, and we all get to have that experience. It's not a "one person can carry the whole team all the time" type game, and way too many people play it like that, and I've come to accept that's just what quick play and brawl are for, so I stick to where I feel I belong, in a place that values actual communication and teamwork. I grew up playing competitive games in my free time. I was in a R6Vegas clan that actually won some money play a small tourney together. Halo2 and Q3 were my bread and butter a lot of the time and getting that degree of skill based gameplay was a lot of fun, it only ever got better when it became more about how good we were as a team, as opposed to how good I was. It's just a different approach to competition. I'm a terrible person to play board games with unless I can have a beer and just relax. And I'm 25 now. So, everyones different.
Nothing wrong with competitive games, just the people who bring the worst version of themselves out during them. Still, when TF2 introduced MvM I never went back. I don't know, listening to "don't switch to <class>, and use only <weapon>" is massive, massive turnoff for me.
I'm 25 and enjoy playing games like Total War or Cities: Skylines or GMod; games where I can meet my own goals at my own pace and where just about anything can happen. Every now and again I'll throw in playing single player on BF or CoD even. Otherwise the only competitive gaming I could see myself doing would be on CoH/CoH2 on the PC or CoD on the Xbox for something quick and fast paced. Otherwise I'm inclined to agree with the article. I have CSGO for example but don't ever play it. It just sits for the sake of sitting in my library I guess. At one time though, 18-21, I'd play a lot of CS online and would have a blast. Now, just not appealing to me. To each their own.
I fucking loved playing HL Deathmatch. I didn't know anyone on the servers and I sucked on the scoreboard but between flying around the map and fragging anything in sight it was just....fun. But I could never get into Counter Strike. The community just seemed like a big pile of cunts who absolutely hated you if you were not at all good.
I used to play competitive games, like, a lot. League of Legends was one of the first games I managed to get to an acceptably high tier, but when I did, I felt so damn empty. It wasn't worth bettering myself, it wasn't worth all that time spent between games plotting out more effective maneuvers/strategies. In the end, it was more of a low yet visible grunt of success in the endless sea of people also putting in hours of work for a simple title and rank of 'nobility.' To even do that, you had to trudge through the endless amounts of rage from others, and the feeling of inadequacy. I think a lot of people who get into competitive games get changed by it so much so that they stop having fun... and you know, I'd rather have fun playing games.
23, having a hard time getting involved in competitive despite willing to improve judging by how i always break under slightest pressure, i guess not
23, having a hard time getting involved in competitive despite willing to improve judging by how i always break under slightest pressure, i guess not
If you honestly want to improve, you'll do it. Play, experiment, do things that aren't part of what you normally do. You just need to stop giving a fuck about doing bad, and start giving a fuck about what you like about the game more.
One reason for some games is just execution becomes harder with age. I've heard of starcraft players having to drop even by their 20s as they just could not keep up with the physical demands. And hell, not even super high level players have this problem, I've even heard people complaining that they could not complete the campaign on brutal because they can't manage the actions per minute they used to. As for me I'm 19 and find coop competitive games really infuriating, getting dedicated players together that are good is really challenging and playing with randoms is rolling the dice. I prefer starcraft 2 because I die because I'm a fucktard, not because anyone else was.
But I could never get into Counter Strike. The community just seemed like a big pile of cunts who absolutely hated you if you were not at all good.
It doesn't "seem" like that, it is that. Counter Strike is quite possibly the worst online game I've ever played. Every time I try to give it another chance, I'm always proven wrong. The game is just a magnet for the angriest people with the worst kind of personalities. I could write a book on the nasty people I came across on there. There was a time where I improved my K/D score in a game, and people just started to treat me better, then went back to complaining once it got worse again. "Oh hey, 0 kills is back." "Sorry we suck, we got a 1-5'er here." As if they're getting paid for playing... It's that game that made me wary of other competitive games to begin with.
tbh as a kid cooperative has always been where its at just some fucking hardcore ass kicking and adventuring amongst strangers
Even as someone with several thousands of hours in Dota, I can see why people wouldn't be able to stand this. In fact, especially as someone with several thousands of hours in Dota...
