Hacking is by definition for shits and giggles or just gaining access to a computer without authorisation, you're talking CRACKING which is basically the same but illegal and aims towards somekind of gain.

Intention of gain? Well they do gain from hacking, they gain HUGE media attention and popularity.
Doing something because you find it fun is gain too. Maybe they find successful hack of something big fun. I know I would.
