Maybe I'm getting disproportionately angry, but this picture absolutely infuriates me. [img_thumb]http://thefullbrightcompany.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/vgx_lording.jpg[/img_thumb] People gave you an award, you fucking fucks, look like you appreciate it. At least the cunt with the cock looks like he might possibly be trying to make a shitty faux-serious (but still deserving of a punch) joke face, but the cunt with the cunt (and the red star hat, nice) is LITERALLY LOOKING DOWN HER NOSE AT US. Fucking fuck fuck it's a good thing they wear glasses because if I ever saw them I think I'd spit in their eye. People thought enough of your fucking game to give it an award, at least try to smile, you shits. [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] Also, the very first Pokémon games from 1996 had an abandoned house where you pieced together the backstory from reading journal entries.
That and the fact that it's pretty obvious that it got a lot more attention and praise than it normally would have due to its subject matter.
so what, touching upon a sensitive topic that's been (until recent times) taboo in narrative expressions is suddenly.... out of bounds for praise now?
A lot of it also had to do with people praising its gameplay as being revolutionary when looking through cabinet and bins to find audio and text logs is a regularly criticised mechanic in other games. "Oh my god, Gone Home is amazing for doing a thing System Shock did 15 years ago!"
its often criticized in video games because it deviates and distracts from that particular game's narrative focus - when you turn that around and make it into the game's focal point... the shift in focus can be considered innovative as it takes what is often a supplementary of the gameplay... into "gameplay" (i say that in quotes because many of you guys have a problem with 'proper' games and 'real' gameplay and all that)
game got way too much praise for what it was. winning "BEST PC GAME" at vgx was pretty absurd.
I think you might be exaggerating just a bit.
the fact that this game has had this much of a negative reaction for virtually no reason is more proof that gamers are fucking hiliarious. the game does what it does, it doesn't rip people off, it's not broken, its developers aren't assholes to all their fans, etc. like, how can people get so incredibly upset about this game? is its existence somehow distressing to some of you huge nerds? it got popular enough to get in news headlines, that's literally all it did. [editline]10th March 2014[/editline]
you are the very personification of the angry manbaby gamer stereotype with this post
i was going to dig through old gone home threads to try to find a post like this to show how fucking hysterical gamers get over this game, luckily lazyguy made one for me!!!

because it won "best PC game" undeserving award for a game that is ok
because it won "best PC game" undeserving award for a game that is ok
what you guys think is just ok, and what you guys think is undeserving I don't agree with the decision either but it says a lot to give off such a volatile, self-righteous reaction to something whose only crime is not aligning with your opinion
it has subpar narrative with a cliche story that managed to fit through the vgx committee to which i strongly believe that stanley parable - that not only had a more positive customer feedback and better critic score; gone home still managed to win "best pc game" which i STRONGLY find absurd and absolutely ridiculous. good comparable example would be fez. except the lead for fez was a total shithead.
it's pretty clear that while Gone Home didn't have the fun, witty narrative of the stanley parable or the 'real' gameplay of Paper's, Please, it still managed to make a bigger impact on the gaming industry as a whole - say what you want about Gone Home, but it's still being used as a platform for the discussion of a variety of topics .. or at least it would be if it wasn't shut down at every opportunity by 'gone homo' and others
It did make a big impact, and I'm sorry if I came off as really aggressive but sometimes I get tired of seeing the same posts over, and over again where "lol you didn't like the game cry more gamer manbabies"
maybe some people also get tired of seeing 'gone homo' and 'not a game' over and over again v:v:v
i honestly can't foresee this game doing so well on the main platforms not to sound elitist or anything but it seems like the indie scene has a significantly stronger presence on the pc platform, as well as games that tend to break the mold. i can't see the traditional market demographics for the consoles buying in to a game like gone home, or papers please, or dear esther, or stanley parable, etc, etc etc
Sorry if late, but I still wanna respond because ~gaming culture~
it has subpar narrative with a cliche story that managed to fit through the vgx committee to which i strongly believe that stanley parable - that not only had a more positive customer feedback and better critic score; gone home still managed to win "best pc game" which i STRONGLY find absurd and absolutely ridiculous.
Yeah, but look, let's say everybody agrees on that, what difference does that make. Do you like Stanley Parable less now? That's what it comes down to all the time. "[THIS] was so much BETTER"! If you think so then, well, it is still better. And nobody's gonna take that thing you liked better away. Did Fullbright win exclusive vidya-makin-rights? I think the reason why it won so many awards (and then caused VGX to bandwagon) is actually a mix between the massive nostalgia-bomb (the people who run those sites are the perfect demographic, not just "oh lol streetfightr!!") and them just being tired of carbon-copy games. Because they have to play and report on basically everything. So Gone Home simply gets bonuspoints for telling stories without "gamey" things. Many people say they thought it was a horror game, but why would there be monsters? "Because it's a game." Oh right. Everytime this game comes up a bunch of angry people show up and it's just disheartening. Like, ok, they totally prefer something else, but are they so insecure that they need some dumb awards to feel good about liking it? Same thing with review scores. All people do is look for affirmation and that's why we move forward sooo slooowly in everything that has to do with discussing games on a larger scale.
I don't understand all the hatred this game gets.
Same reason Fez got so much flak, the creators are douchebags. And the game got much more positive critics than it ought to have ever received (like Fez, again).
Except I have never seen the creators of Gone Home act like douchebags.
i honestly can't foresee this game doing so well on the main platforms not to sound elitist or anything but it seems like the indie scene has a significantly stronger presence on the pc platform, as well as games that tend to break the mold. i can't see the traditional market demographics for the consoles buying in to a game like gone home, or papers please, or dear esther, or stanley parable, etc, etc etc
Well there's the starting fact that on PC you have a LOT more chances of sales and inclusions in packs than on consoles. The game is virtually never going to drop in price on consoles, while you can be certain you'll see it at 5 or even 2 bucks at the next big sale on steam. Not to mention its inevitable inclusion into a humble bundle a year from now at best. [editline]11th March 2014[/editline]
Except I have never seen the creators of Gone Home act like douchebags.
They act like they're hot shit and Steve Gaynor somehow thinks working on a dlc for a subpar bioshock game has given him all the credit he needs forever in the gaming industry. It hasn't.
And that is comparable to a man who told everyone they could choke on his dick?
it's pretty clear that while Gone Home didn't have the fun, witty narrative of the stanley parable or the 'real' gameplay of Paper's, Please, it still managed to make a bigger impact on the gaming industry as a whole - say what you want about Gone Home, but it's still being used as a platform for the discussion of a variety of topics .. or at least it would be if it wasn't shut down at every opportunity by 'gone homo' and others
But isn't that the perfect argument against it? If it doesn't have good gameplay or an enjoyable narrative, what does it have?
It's fairly good for a narrative adventure, if not a little generic, but I wouldn't suggest it for the price. -Moustacheman

But isn't that the perfect argument against it? If it doesn't have good gameplay or an enjoyable narrative, what does it have?
a narrative doesn't have to be light and whimsical to be enjoyable, nor does a game's gameplay require an arbitrary level of interactivity/excitement to be good [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] gradually uncovering a story by exploring a vacant house at one's own pace, ((to some people)), can be just as enjoyable as stamping [DENIED] on a crayon passport
Can't say much about the game due to the fact that I haven't even played it, but can it appeal to the console audience? Seeing videos and pictures gives me the feeling it won't sell as well as it has done on the PC, but that's just me.

The thing about gone home is that while it definitely had some interesting aspects, they weren't exactly the pinnacle of originality. A decent narrative bundled with a minimalistic gameplay style as seen in great games before it can certainly make a unique game, but it doesn't equal a groundbreaking, industry-changing masterpiece like some people claimed.
how could you miss the 90's the music was garbage and the fashion was scary bad
I dunno man, Alice In Chains happened in the 90s
the fact that this game has had this much of a negative reaction for virtually no reason is more proof that gamers are fucking hiliarious.
Yeah MAN fuck those GAMERS ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! That and the fact they charged like, $30 for 1 hour of game how the fuck is that acceptable in any way, shape or form.
After reading through this thread and a few others where Gone Home is mentioned, I still fail to see why this game causes a shit storm whenever it's mentioned. Is it really from just some awards they got or am I missing something?
