Such a life with anything past 2005, its becoming a business fad to give stuff away as a one off subscription instead of actually letting you own it. In this case you pay for the drone, but not the software.

Tbh, it's a security thing. It's not there to fuck over customers, they've even warned owners in advance, so it's not like it inconveniences anyone in any sort of way.
It's there to keep accidents from happening - because if there's one thing the media loves, it's drone accidents.
Newer DJI drones are expensive and pretty advanced drones, and you don't want them to malfunction.
A malfunctioning drone is a potential hazard and just generally a very shitty thing to experience.
If you want drones that you can mess around with without any sort of limitations, it's best to build a drone yourself or get some open-source hackable drone.
If you buy a DJI drone, you are voluntarily buying into this kind of thing, where the upside is amazing stability and powerful features, but the downside is that they're less customizable.
