GeForce GTX 680 announced, powerful enough for Samaritan

I already paid way too much on a 570, paying anything above $300 for a card seems ridiculous.
GTA IV has nothing to do with your graphics card, it's entirely dependent on your CPU.
If you can't run GTA IV well it means you're running a really really shitty processor, even my crappy dual core E7300 can run GTA IV at 40 fps.
If you have such a shitty processor it's not surprise you can't run either of those games at max settings either, I mean for fucks sake I can run BF3 at a mix of high/ultra at 30~ FPS 1680x1050 and I have a 6850.
Oh mo, my CPU is perfectly fine. I don't have the Vram to max out GTA.
man i'm still on a 260gtx and a core2duo and i haven't had a reason to upgrade
maybe if games actually pushed hardware there would be reason to upgrade
BF3 shits on my 260 GTX

I have a 2500k overclock to 4.8GHz with two 6870s and I can barely play the game on medium.
It's just a terribly optimized game.
I want this! If I bathed in money. Too lazy to work...
I'm getting this so I won't half to upgrade for a while. Future-proof. I'll wait for the Ivy Bridge, maybe.

I can run GTA on medium with my 9500Gt and AMD Athlon II X2 250...
I can run GTA on medium with my 9500Gt and AMD Athlon II X2 250...
That's what terrible optimization does.
It's not about how strong the card is or how good the CPU is, it's all about whether or not it can handle the code.
So you can have a shit setup that runs it really well and a godly setup that can't even run the damn thing.
I regret that now. I make a minor point about GTA IV and the thread goes to discussion of said game.
Pfft. This is Nvidia.
GL - GS - GT - GTS - GTX
Remember those? And just to be nice they also slapped ULTRA next to the GT and GTX if they had overclocked them a bit.
but the GS and gl are no longer and the GT is like a entry card series then GTS for enthusiast of that range as well as being smaller than the final GTX cards for them in all their glory.

Just chiming in to further disprove your point.
2600k @ 4.5ghz
Dual 3GB 580 Lightnings
4x4GB DDR3-1600
Running on low or high doesn't matter, I'm around 30-35fps.

As a tip, turn off hyperthreading on your i7
You have 4 cores, and each core pretends to be 2 cores because it can potentially run faster, but in very specific situations. However, games do not know which is a real core, and a 'fake' core, so games can end up running two threads on one physical core, so causing quite a significant performance hit compared to running on two separate cores
Turning off hyperthreading means that your computer only uses the 4, physical cores, and so you can potentially get a speed boost in games by turning it off
Still running great with my Crossfired HD3870 512mb cards!
Everything runs on high settings with smooth fps.
I need this card for my new PC I'm building.
Apparently this card sucks for anything that is not games though, so if you do a lot of stuff like video rendering, etc that really benefits from solid video card, you'll actually end up getting better results from a mid-range Fermi than you would from a flagship Kepler so I've heard.
Would probably explain why this can get so power efficient at least. Cut out all the stuff that doesn't directly benefit gaming performance, and streamline it to work best with only games = a more efficent card that can do less outside of gaming.
And I'm still running a Core2Quad and a 5870 and I still haven't found a single game that gave me a reason to upgrade.
Should i get this card? currently i have an geforce 9600 gt and i was looking for a GTX 460 since it was cheap enough and seemed to be an good upgrade

What monitor resolution are you running at? Im on 1680x1050 (with i5 750), and the (quite overclocked in my case) 460 is a little underpowered sometimes for games

The next upgrade you'll need to make is your processor
I found a huge performance increase going from the Q6600 to the i5 750

I got a GTX460 at the minute and while it's suffice for now I don't think it's going to handle upcoming games very well. I'd recommend aiming a little higher at least if you want something decently future proof, especially if you're wanting to run games on high settings.
The only reason I can think about is that the better your GPU, the prettier your game, regardless of your video settings.
For example the new FPS friendly yet effective anti aliasing they have is something you set up on the card's settings, not ingame, which makes it available everywhere.
Basically it will make today's beautiful games even more beautiful, beyond their own settings.
Every meaningful graphical option is coming from the gameengine. If an engine doesn't support something it doesn't. AFAIK the hardware overriding options are basically post process filters that modify some small things like forced AA. It's like putting gaussian blur on a jaggy image in photoshop, it might make it look a bit better but destroy detail elsewhere. (Ok it's probably more complicated with edge detection algorithms and what ever but you get what I mean.)
I'm not saying postprocessing is useless but you can't replace something that isn't there at the core level with a bit of spray paint on top. Hardware overriding game settings is hardly ever beneficial, they're just there if you really have to or want that extra perfume on the rotting carcass.
When Nvidia (and I guess Ati) releases drivers they usually optimize them for new games so yes it can sometimes break something in older games. Then those games might benefit from some fiddling.
As with all new awesome graphical features they usually have to be implemented in the gameengines themselves. "Unfortunately TXAA needs to be implemented in upcoming game titles" at least according to guru3d.
Edit: It seems to be working through hardware override as well. Might be some fancy postprocessing then.

Finally, something that can play GTA IV on Medium!
Finally, something that can play GTA IV on Medium!
But I can max GTAIV with my 480...
With 60 fps.

Good luck with that.
I love how it changed from crysis to gta4.
Blame AMD's shitty drivers.
I had more trouble with NVIDIA's drivers than AMD's to be honest.

I sure hope they didn't downclock the 690 again
I've been thinking of getting this.
It's just so much money...
But I can max GTAIV with my 480...

GTA4 is very inconsistent. I'd kill for 60fps on my system at any resolution
With Regards to GTA IV, I could get away with 20-30FPS at Med-high on my AMD PhII x2 550 & Geforce GTS450. But to the GTX680, this thing costs more than my pc ALONE. But I hope that the lower 600 series cards are a bit more affordable and offer similar Value for money.

I have a 580 and the most I get is around 40. Unless you overclock the shit out of yours, which I don't at all, then NOPE.
