I don't believe you can if you're a free player.
Oh that's bullshit if I've finished 95% of my trooper story only to have it locked out.
The official site (via PC Gamer) also points out that even making a single purchase will upgrade you to "preferred" status. This lets you sprint, use bank slots, chat and trade, and licenses you to equip purple items.
Unable to run, chat and trade items, or store items. Lovely.
As long as they maybe let us run as free-to-play, I will do this. I loved the story of the characters, and I want to finish the ones I started, but for how the game turned out it wasn't worth the money.

Lovely.
Don't worry, that's just PC Gamer being mis-informed, being preferred grants you that crap at level 1, you get chat bank slots and trade when you hit level 6 and I believe sprint at level 10.
