Great port...

Surely the animation would be better if the camera moved in-between the arms?

Its happening because the shaders are set to low, I run L4D2 in rather low settings for performance reasons.
to be fair it is a beta
True it is in beta, but its the missing textures that happened for blood harvests skybox all over again.
But you ARE playing a specific character in L4D2.
That's right; I'm playing as a character.
In games with no body awareness, like Half-Life 2 and Deus Ex, I am the character.
This is exactly why characters like Gordon, Master Chief, etc. are very good for games.
The less detailed qualities a character has, the more people can relate to them.
When you don't have ANY details of a character (in-game), because you don't see them or they're mute, you can relate to them better and create your own personality and palette for them. That's not to say giving characters a personality, voice, and depth won't make a character lovable. But the less definite details you create, the more it's up to the player to mold their own character - and experience.

Yes.
I AM a floating pair of hands.

I always thought it was because the animations would look weird on some of the special infected, mainly the jockey. I mean, he's so short and to the ground that the camera is actually positioned above the jockey rather then his perspective. Believe me, I've checked-back before they patched out using "thirdpersonshoulder" command I tired using it in versus mode as a jockey, the camera is literally positioned above the jockey's body.
Yes.
I AM a floating pair of hands.
Pretty much this. If you're going to say that only showing a character's hands makes them a better character, why not get rid of seeing the hands or what they're holding in them altogether? Bottom line is, the character is not you, you are playing the character. You are not a cybernetic super detective whatsis, you're a guy/girl sitting in front of a computer playing a game controlling the cyber-guy thing. So don't make such a big deal about it.
besides, where is my damn 1911 ?
real reason?
if you were playing Coach and looked down, you couldn't see any legs
they figured to cut it altogether.

I could still see my feet playing as a boomer in l4d1 though...after tilting the camera all the way down...

Would you say that Half-Life 2 is less immersive than, say, F.E.A.R. because of the lack of self-awareness in the former?

I hardly ever get "immersed in games, but yeah I'd say FEAR is more immersive than HL2. I like knowing that I'm playing a character that actually has an entire body. Seeing your legs when you slide and kick is pretty cool. It's like how I like seeing my actual body and legs when I play ODST. HL2 you're just Gordon's floating arms. Hell, you're just Gordon: a character with no character at all.

Yeah, I like to see my legs when doing those power-slides or kicks in games like Crysis 2 and F.E.A.R. but that doesn't really matter when you're playing a game where you can't do that, such as Deus Ex or Half-Life.
The idea is that you are Gordon Freeman. You belong in this world and you are not just in control of a pre-defined character.
Let's just agree to disagree.
When I play a game that lacks body awareness I don't feel like the person is me, because in the real world when I look down I can see my body.
Lacking body awareness simply makes me feel like floating hands.

and a sliding camera
that's my number one pet peeve with source engine games, there's almost no swaying or bobbing to the camera
Any one wanna play add up herbietheferret ;)
I DO wish they hadn't gotten rid of legs and changed the FOV perspective in L4D2. It is kind of a minor thing, but I just really like seeing legs for some reason :P
legs are fuckin cool what are you guys on about
say what you must about immersion and your relationship to the character but just having legs there was kind of a neat thing
There is something just a little more immersive about it looking like you're actually in your character's body.
A l4d2 campaign comes out.
Let's talk about immersion and feet.

No, Gordon Freeman is an MIT theoretical physicist and thats it. Valve didn't add any character to him other than that. The whole "YUR GURDUN FREMEN" thing is just an excuse to make up for the lack of characterization and personality
Yeah in Half-Life you aren't literally Gordon Freeman. It's just that Gordon is such an undefined character, you play a huge role in defining who he is.
L4D is very different because you hear the player's voices and you constantly see them. They all have their own personality and backstories.
Good, its not a encore.

Did you even play L4D2? What you stated is also in L4D2
