Seems like a good move, the four buttons seemed in a strange position you couldn't get to easily.
from what i can tell from other articles, it'll be keeping the touch pad though, just with ghost mode. put your thumb down on the touchpad and it'll show a icon of where your thumb is on the pad with buttons you can press and such
The addition of buttons--especially those that align with the now-standard Xbox configuration--should make switching to a Steam Controller much easier. However, it also makes the controller less unique, which may make it a difficult sell for gamers that are perfectly content with their Xbox 360 controllers.
Gee, maybe the reason it's "less unique" is because most other controllers use it because it fucking works?
don't fix what ain't broke.
Although it's of course not really a problem for a controller, the visual design suffers because it now obviously shows that it was supposed to have something in the middle and now there's a ton of empty space. I wonder if they're change the design.
don't fix what ain't broke.
All innovation is bad hooray for the status quo
Except analog stick suck ass and the whole goal of the Steam machine is bringing PC Gaming as close as possible to the living room which is hard when you're still stuck with crap controllers that don't do well-made PC games justice.
The candy-like buttons don't seem to gel with the rest of the design but I like the idea. Hopefully that's just a proof-of-concept... concept, and they'll make the design more unified.
All innovation is bad hooray for the status quo
I think there's a difference between innovation- ie, the trackpads- and removing something that most controller-based games are designed around.
don't fix what ain't broke.
Yeah, basically. Analog sticks work reliably. Buttons work reliably. You push a button, the thing happens. You tilt the analog stick, the thing happens. Trackpads are insanely unreliable and the idea of "clicking" a trackpad instead of just pushing a tangible button sounds like absolute crap to me. You want to make the "perfect" controller? Take the Wii U Pro controller and swap the right stick and the buttons. Bam. Perfect controller. No need for experimental bullshit or motion whatsits. Buttons and sticks that work on a controller that is comfortable to hold.
I truly believe that in the end Valve will come up with an awesome controller. Taking feedback from the community and devs is the PERFECT move.
All innovation is bad hooray for the status quo
Innovation for the sake of innovation is pointless, what matters is what works better, not what is done less. I'd rather have buttons that work than a more unique idea that doesn't.
cant want to buy one i might buy a tv and chill once streaming is finish
I would've liked both the touch screen and some physical buttons but not like the previous steam controller. Those buttons were in awkward as fuck positions. Oh yeah let me just move my thumb that's currently on my movement pad to hit a button. That wouldn't work at all for pretty much any game.

The beautiful thing about the Xbox controller is that you can hold it in a ton of weird positions and still use the majority of the controller. If you use both thumbsticks, you can still press the A/B/X/Y/shoulder/trigger buttons with your index finger. But with this? How the hell are you supposed to use either set of buttons on the front face? You're either going to have to take your thumbs off the trackpads, or contort your index finger into some horrible position to press them. They're away from your wrists, so you have to stretch your thumb out to press them, while on a PS/Xbox controller, the buttons are towards your wrist.
Yeah those buttons are going to be a nightmare to use.
With the position the buttons are in it looks like they could of kept the screen with the addition of the new buttons. I don't see much purpose for a touch screen though so it looks good so far.
I thought the touch screen was a cool feature :( sad to see it go
I really like the changes hope they add more buttons though
jeez those bottom two buttons are gonna strain the fuck out of your thumbs
that change in the controller ergonomics seems like it's trying to fit more also into the fighter or quick to tap buttons type games then focus on a medium between a keyboard/mouse with a now standard console controller configuration. Though I agree with moving the two upper right buttons down to the lower two for better access, but what Saber15 said it doesn't look comfortable.
The new controller looks worse, they moved buttons further away from the trackpads
The new controller looks worse, they moved buttons further away from the trackpads
I can see why, probably would if they could but it would weaken the structure, the older buttons were probably not meant for such abuse.
All innovation is bad hooray for the status quo
you really can't innovate much when it comes to the human hands. having four buttons in a semi-rectangular layout is the best for human hands. having weird buttons that you gotta crane your hands around or do weird bullshit to push isn't that good of an idea. the fact that they experimented with that idea and made prototypes is good enough. it's not like they scrapped the idea of touchscreen buttons right away.
jeez those bottom two buttons are gonna strain the fuck out of your thumbs
Doesn't look too different from, say, the 360's D-pad.
Honestly, I'd probably want them to shrink the right trackpad so they could get ABXY in a better position. I know why it's the way it is, but if I'm using a gamepad in the first place I'm playing a game where I'm using the face buttons more than it. [editline]16th January 2014[/editline]
Doesn't look too different from, say, the 360's D-pad.
The 360's D-pad did nothing right.
I honestly can't stand using joysticks for aiming. I can do it just fine, but it annoys me, feels like I'm controlling a character with turning controls meant for a vehicle. I am curious to see how the trackpads work, though I think it would have been a good idea to have a controller like a refined 360 gamepad except replace the right joystick with a trackball for precise aiming, as I've used those before just for the hell of it and they are pretty easy to use with an FPS game.
Please put a Steam logo in the center that can be used to bring up Big Picture Mode, like the 360 guide button does.
