there should be buttons on the back for your middle fingers would be cool

You mean these?

The 360's D-pad did nothing right.
Then the Xbox One's, which I understand is a lot better.
At this rate I think I'd have an easier time controlling games with a Bop It Extreme.

i am more excited for the steam controller

I've tried it, it's really nothing special. The whole controller feels slightly less ergonomic than the 360 controller. The Wii U Pro controller is basically a perfection of that design style (it doesn't have analogue triggers though)
God damn it. The entire point of the trackpads was that the clicky sections would be able to emulate buttons when you weren't sliding your thumb around to emulate a stick. And here I was looking forward to another VMU-esque controller like the GamePad.
Guh. My interest in this thing just dropped about 70%.
I truly believe that in the end Valve will come up with an awesome controller. Taking feedback from the community and devs is the PERFECT move.
Sure, if you want to end up with an Xbox 360 controller with the Steam logo instead of the Xbox orb. 'Cuz this thread hasn't already perfectly demonstrated how much gamers can be change-resistant mongoloids stuck in the past, right?
I mean Valve I love ya and anything new and different is always fantastic, but the 360 Controller design is pretty much perfect and I'd probably use that if I ever got a Steambox.

Trackpads though
Analog sticks are the fucking worst, they are imprecise as fuck and require way too much adjusting, trackpads fix that problem really well.
why do they say that the button layout is xbox style? what happened to the PS1? :(

If anything it's closer to a WiiU gamepad.

Emulated buttons suck a lot harder than actual buttons.

I'm not sure I'm reading your post right but you seem to think that clickable trackpads are going away. They're not. What's going away is the touch screen that used to be between the trackpads.
The clickable trackpads aren't emulated buttons, but physical buttons.
My point being that the physical buttons in the trackpads made dedicated buttons unnecessary, and getting rid of the touch screen so we can put back in discrete face button zones just reeks of compromise towards people who are already well-accounted for with other controllers.
I thought the SteamPad in its initially-revealed form was something special. I can't deny that the grip triggers and trackpads are still worth being excited about, but the touch screen and that weird "corners" ABXY layout were something unique that I felt had potential (not to mention I've been a proponent of auxiliary screens since the Dreamcast days; Windows Sideshow, anyone?) SteamPad was cool because it was so radically different, and taking away from that to fit some notion of a "standard layout" just feels redundant. If you're gonna mix things up, why go halfway?
The only change I would've made from the initial design would be to add a motion chip in the controller if there already wasn't one, or perhaps a STEM slot. I don't see either of those anywhere.
Doesn't look too different from, say, the 360's D-pad.
think about it like this. say your thumb is resting comfortably in the centermost ring of the trackpad. if you want to press the bottom button, you'll have to rotate your thumb all the way down to it or move your hand to a much less comfortable position, then move it back up the pad when you're done. and what if you're playing a game that requires regular usage of that button?
at best it's going to be a very awkward and uncomfortable movement that you'll have to repeat a lot of times, and at worst it could strain your thumbs and make playing for long stretches of time extremely unpleasant. it's a very silly position to put your buttons.

just think about the angle your thumb's going to have to move at, eugh it's making my hand hurt just thinking about it

You might be imagining it wrong, the complaints I've seen have been that the buttons are a bit to small on the model; It's not done yet though so I'm sure they will work out the ergonomics.
Innovation for the sake of innovation is pointless, what matters is what works better, not what is done less. I'd rather have buttons that work than a more unique idea that doesn't.
yeah well the general consensus is that console controllers suck. mouse+keyboard is not innovated on because it works well, and peripherals are bought as needed. the same cannot be said for controllers, one of said peripherals that becomes the main attraction once k+m is no longer available, IE when on the couch.
so no. It's not innovation for the sake of innovation.
