I'm assuming Valve takes a cut? If so I'm surprised it took them this long.
Eh, Valve takes a 75% cut... ninja'd
Eh, Valve takes a 75% cut... ninja'd
Yeah, just found that out. Fuck Valve. That is just fucking disgusting.
The Facepunch community is outraged at the idea of charging money for a mod. This irony - I cannot handle it.
The percentage of revenue an item creator receives from direct sales of their item in this Workshop is 25%, as stipulated in the Supplemental Workshop Terms.
What the fuck, that's just fucking disgusting. Paying modders for their work is one thing, but having Valve (and presumably Bethesda in this case) take a 75% cut? Jesus christ, what's happened to you Valve...
The one bright side is that the game developer gets a cut, encouraging more mod support. Otherwise this seems like a terrible idea. [editline]23rd April 2015[/editline]
The only thing I could argue is a pure money making scam is trading cards. But really it's hard to tell what Valve thinks. I hope that the backlash causes Valve to ajust this system until it's fair to everyone, but really I doubt it'll happen.
Honestly I like the idea of trading cards, because idiots do buy them. Nice to be able to get a dollar or so back when you buy a game by offloading the steam cards.
If I am gonna pay for mods then I'd like the money to at the very least go directly to the creator. Having Valve snatch most of it is some serious bullshit. They really fucking are pioneers in making money out of doing nothing at all.
The Facepunch community is outraged at the idea of charging money for a mod. This irony - I cannot handle it.
A fully fledged mod like GMod, fine. But just general modding is silly.
And why is shit like
NOTE: At this moment, it contains only 2 pieces (Dress and Shoes). A lot of additional pieces are being in the works and they will become available soon.
Allowed? I get what the idea of this system is trying to accomplish, but this just seems shady to me and allows people to take money for unfinished projects with more ease.
valve has been on the downslope for years now, anyone who didn't see bullshit like this coming after they started pushing hard to get devs into distributing their PC games exclusively through steam is delusional. vote with your wallet, the backlash is pretty bad and i think valve has made a huge miscalculation here.
And the final nail hit the coffin.
And why is shit like Allowed? I get what the idea of this system is trying to accomplish, but this just seems shady to me and allows people to take money for unfinished projects with more ease.
Its allowed because steam is (for better or worse) mostly a free market. If you don't like it, vote with your feet and don't support that shit. I'm sure as hell not going to be buying any mods from the steam workshop. If enough people don't then content creators will realise that its not a good idea. As long as there is a market for this shit (ie morons buying it) then they will keep trying it. [editline]23rd April 2015[/editline]
And the final nail hit the coffin.
Not really. Some of you are acting like this is the worst thing to ever happen. All this is doing is giving more choice to both content creators and customers. If you don't like it, don't use it. People will soon get the message.
if someones made a massive overhaul mod and put a lot of time into it or something, then where's the problem for asking for a little money
The problem is they're being had. They get coffee money from their own mod, but Bethsoft banks 75% from all mods. In other words, they're not doing it for the benefit of the modder, they're monetizing the modding community in their favor, overwhelmingly. Its voluntary, of course, but plenty of modders will be tricked into it, because people are fucking idiots. I guess its still better than turning tricks in an alley, but its still exploitation. Now the upside, if you give a better cut to the modders, you might be able to attract better modders with more skill and experience who can turn out good content for a little money on the side. Besides that, if this works out, maybe it will offer a new incentive for devs to support modding, and on a deeper level. The higher quality and volume of mods, the more purchases to be made. 75-25 is bogus, though, especially for such small transactions. That's barely even worth it for the modder, all things considered. I'd be curious to know what the split is for markets like Daz3d and Renderosity. I guarantee the vendors make more than 25%, and that market's thriving. EDIT: Looking around, why isn't anybody else mentioning this? Hello? People? 75%. SEVENTY-FIVE, from every single transaction from every single paid mod on the workshop. You people are whistling past the graveyard on all this. Its not a question of whether modders should make money from their mods, because they pretty much won't either way with a 25% cut on a micro-transaction. I should have gone into marketing, you can make people believe anything...
The Facepunch community is outraged at the idea of charging money for a mod. This irony - I cannot handle it.
But are you comparing a total conversion mod to a total conversion? Or are we comparing Garrys Mod to Modder created Horse Armor?
The Facepunch community is outraged at the idea of charging money for a mod. This irony - I cannot handle it.
gmod was free and a standalone game later [editline]24th April 2015[/editline] again, imagine garry charging 3 bucks for gmodv3
I like the idea of content creators getting financial support from their creations, but this:
Bethsoft banks 75% from all mods.
is disgusting. It's like they saw the "steam takes a 30% cut" and decided to reverse it. The creators don't even get a majority of the reward while they do the entirety of the work.
Games Workshop, Hasbro and Fantasy Flight Games will destroy Tabletop Simulator.
It's like they saw the "steam takes a 30% cut" and decided to reverse it. The creators don't even get a majority of the reward while they do the entirety of the work.
And to be clear, Bethsoft already makes their money when they sell their game. The money generated from this workshop thing is entirely based around the mods. Honestly, you'd be better off donating to the modder privately and bypassing the 75% Bethsoft Tax if you really wanted to support modding. I can't imagine putting my mods up for sale like this, though. You're basically trading the respect and praise of your peers (the traditional reward for good modding that I'm used to) for a marginal monetary reward. Or at least that's the vibe I'm getting so far. Huh, this scenario sounds really familiar.
if someones made a massive overhaul mod and put a lot of time into it or something, then where's the problem for asking for a little money
Mods are usually made under the assumption that they will be free with donations if the creator wants to be paid for their work. All they're doing now is setting a new pirate ship sailing. I mean, regular game devs have problems getting me to buy DLC at full price, why would I pay for something with no quality guarantee?

Or at least that's the vibe I'm getting so far. Huh, this scenario sounds really familiar.
Yes exactly this. I have no issue with mod makers receiving monetary compensation for the effort they put in to create custom content, but for 25% I don't see this as a financially feasible approach. Although it is better than not getting any money at all, for someone who wishes to dedicate their time into content creation for a game they enjoy, the monetary reward just doesn't make much sense for the respect that they could potentially lose. And mirroring this with greenlight, I expect to see that the good mods that are worth their price will be few and far between, and very hard to find under the flood of low-quality releases of people trying to take part in this gold rush.
CD Projekt is becomming my favourite game company and GOG is becomming my favourite distribution method. This could have been handled so much better. They could have taken a few mods that were awesome and intergrated it in as optional DLC.
The modding community for Bethesda games already has issues with people stealing credit for mods and uploading them to obscure foreign sites. I'm willing to bet almost every paid mod is just going to be uploaded to 10 other websites anyway. I don't think a DMCA takedown is going to work so well when a mod is spread across Russia, China, South Korea, Japan, and Germany.
But are you comparing a total conversion mod to a total conversion? Or are we comparing Garrys Mod to Modder created Horse Armor?
Both, potentially. If a talented modder who creates a genuinely good mod can benefit from this, I see it as a good thing. Even if that means some lazy hack can make a quick buck from a reskin. Obviously I don't know how this whole thing will progress though, so who knows?
Oh god..it begins.. http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse/?appid=72850&browsesort=trend&section=readytouseitems&requiredflags%5B%5D=paiditems
There are some mods that this is understandable for, but none of them are for skyrim. [editline]24th April 2015[/editline]
I'd like to know what license the creators of those tools released them under.
SKSE is under a generic MIT license, which explicitly allows resale and redistribution by third parties. FNIS is under a proprietary license that prohibits redistribution and modification (and by extension resale), except to FNIS Idle Spells, which can be modified but not redistributed. It doesn't explicitly allow redistribution of derivative works of FNIS idle spells, but it can be considered implied. There's no legal ground there.
The problem is, that sooner or later every good mod will only be available as paid version. Not everybody has a gold shitting donkey sitting in the basement. It should be optional donations. This also makes modders look like greedy assholes.
Wow, what the fuck is wrong with you? How are they being greedy assholes for asking for money for something they put hundreds of hours of work into? If you don't want to pay for it you can just make it yourself. Oh wait, it's a motherfucking shitload of work
Saying the same thing from the other thread. The price-tag shouldn't be seen as a business-model but rather a fair trade for a cup of coffee. A donate option is nice .. but sadly not used that often, if at all. "Something that someone took time to create can now cost money? What a world"
Oh god..it begins.. http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse/?appid=72850&browsesort=trend§ion=readytouseitems&requiredflags%5B%5D=paiditems
Some of the prices are ridiculous also.
Holy shit, some of these mods are costly, this not even funny... Some of these mods don't even do anything Who thought this was a good ideal?!?
Origin is worse than Steam, but Valve and EA are both fighting hard for shitty game developer at the moment. It's like everyone at valve needs a solid slap to the face to snap them out of it.
Why is Origin shit?
This is utter bullshit. You can literally get Skyrim for $5 and here, we're talking about paying $5 for a re-skin of a sword.
