the death scenes are getting more creative and funny tho points there [editline]22nd January 2013[/editline]
That's not a good character, that's just you projecting your own emotions, or empathetic emotions you think he should feel. You're criticising Isaac for not being a character you liked but praising him in Dead Space where he arguably wasn't even a character at all.
but that's what Gordon Freeman is and everybody fucking loves Gordon Freeman.
but that's what Gordon Freeman is and everybody fucking loves Gordon Freeman.
You can't argue with somebodies opinion based on what OTHER people like

You're criticising Isaac for not being a character you liked but praising him in Dead Space where he arguably wasn't even a character at all.
I liked Isaac a lot because even thought silent, you knew he was not just a floating pair of arms. Shit like grunting, breathing, choking from lack of oxygen, blood curdling screams from deaths which are some of the best in any game, like you sort of gave a fuck and that little stuff gave Isaac character even if he didnt talk, he just seemed like a badass. Also that heartbeat, that shit goes up and down depending on whats happening. But that badass feeling goes away in 2 because of cheesy dialog and a generic as fuck voice.
but that's what Gordon Freeman is and everybody fucking loves Gordon Freeman.
Everybody love Alyx, Barney, Kleiner, and Eli. They only cling to Gordon because the other characters make such a big deal about him. It doesn't make him a well written character. In Halflife you have a group of characters who are all likable, and all of these characters like the player character and imply he's a great person, players have no reason to believe otherwise. In Dead Space the only two characters spend the whole game acusing each other of knowing more than they're letting on (they're both correct) and then actively try to sabotage each other, only using Isaac as a tool. Neither character cares about Isaac, there's no implicit emotional ties the player should care about. Isaac is just a gun with legs. Gordon Freeman is a floating gun with people who implicitly and explicitly care about him. Okay.
What I don't get is why people say that Dead Space is scary and then go on about how much they hate Slender for the same reasons they love Dead Space.
You know what comes with those enviroments? Fucking cinematic close ups of new necromorphs and spooktacular QTEs. Probably through space with generic red mines that make no sense instead of different looking debris. Having good enviroments dont mean much when you fuck up the other shit. Also Isaac having a voice is dumb because its so fucking generic and it makes no sense that hes just magically talking now. Its like if Valve gave Gordon the most generic voice. Imagine Gordon trading 1 liners with Alyx and Kliener.
I mean how everyone says they butchered the entire franchise by having a portion of the game take place out in the open in the snow. The situations everyone wanted return after a while. Plus Isaac has been talking non stop since the first minutes of Dead Space 2. Considering the living people he's been in contact with, Nicole, and so on, he kinda needs to talk.

In 1 he was a badass because he was just an engineer doing anything to survive and get off the ship. Like, the marker, the necromorphs, all that other shit didnt matter except trying to get closure on Nicole and getting off the ship, thats it. In 2 they made it seemed like he was some action superstar. Its just dark with shitty generic music playing, not much of that is happening in Dead Space. You cant even compare the two games at all.

If no one told you Isaac was an engineer most people would have assumed he was a soldier, he wears an armoured suit, he shoots shit, he doesn't fix a god damed thing. In DS1 he was an engineer in name only. In DS1 he had no characterisation. In DS2 he spent the whole game trying to get help. At the start of the game he was looking for help to leave the Sprawl, once he finds out about the Marker he tries to get help in destroying it. How was he an action superstar? In DS2 he solved most of his problems by using his engineering knowledge. He built a plasma cutter to protect himself, he repaired the solar array, he hacked open most locked doors rather than look for a way around. In DS1 all he did was shoot shit, blow shit up, and play basketball.
but that's what Gordon Freeman is and everybody fucking loves Gordon Freeman.
Nobody likes Gordon as a character. They like him because they are him. And no, adding a voice to a character doesn't make him into any less of a solid character. DS1 Isaac was just as much of a "generic-space-badass" as DS2 Isaac. In the first game, he was a guy, in space, with a suit of armor, shooting alien zombies, cut and dried. In Dead Space 2, they at least CHARACTERIZED him as more of an engineer. If you ask me, DS1 Isaac wasn't a character, he was a cardboard cutout with a picture of your face taped on it.

And Issac sounds generic because he's a normal fucking guy who is in a really shitty situation

And what are you getting at with the whole if you werent told Isaac was an engineer or not? No fucking shit you wouldnt know, thats why they told you. Its like saying you wouldnt know you were the Dragonborn in Skyrim unless they told you and you are making this seem like a bad thing. Same with basketball, dont see how thats a bad thing, sometimes you gotta cool off and shoot some hoops after almost getting killed every second.
Same with basketball, dont see how thats a bad thing, sometimes you gotta cool off and shoot some hoops after almost getting killed every second.
Somebody who actually tries to justify playing the stupid space basket ball minigame as PERFECTLY reasonable on Isaac's part during the situation he was in is just talking out of their ass. Saying DS1 Isaac was clearly an engineer is like saying Gordon Freeman is clearly a theoretical physicist. At least in DS2 they made it seem like he was actually doing something that required a higher level of knowledge with working with technology, even if the person playing could still figure it out.

Also my shit was a joke with the basketball dont see how you took me seriously.
You mean by playing a hacking minigame where you line up a line on the other right line? .
That's why I said they made it "seem" like he was actually doing something. Even if its a simple rotating the lines minigame, its more involved than the "press E to X" that solved every problem in DS1, and it actually showed Isaac doing something that looked like hacking or engineer work. I'm not saying its more complex gameplay-wise, but helps to get the "engineer" point across much better.
You act like Isaac never went to fix any engine problems, fix tram problems(the very first objective really) turn on a centrifuge, make a thermite bomb, mix some shit together. They were things a soldier with a minor mechanics degree would do, not an engineer for planet destroying spaceships. Nothing he does implies he's an engineer, all his engineering skill is told to the player by other characters, it's never demonstrated by Isaac. In Dead Space Isaac finds a plasma cutter, he finds the stasis module, he flicks switches. In Dead Space 2 he builds a plasma cutter, he builds the stasis module, he tears access panels off and rewires doors. To fix the engine in Dead Space Isaac has to place 2 batteries and flick a switch. To repair the solar array in Dead Space 2 Isaac has to disable the main power, bringing down the AI that wouldn't let him progress, repair the elevetor which brings him up to the array, and realign the solar reflectors to bring the array online. In Dead Space we're told that Isaac is an engineer, in Dead Space 2 we're shown that he's an engineer.

Id rather just put shit in some slots and flip a switch, than put some shit in some slots and play the same hacking minigame. Also he didnt build the plasma cutter, he took it off a machine.
Also he didnt build the plasma cutter, he took it off a machine.
And through space engineering wired it to his flashlight so that activating the medical plasma cutter was done by turning on the flashlight.
And through space engineering wired it to his flashlight so that activating the medical plasma cutter was done by turning on the flashlight.
You are nitpicking at things that are just put in a game for the sake of being a gameplay element, not to give a character any more meaning. Of course the flashlights gonna attach, its goes on all the weapons. Its like why you dont question a spray bottle called first aid spray that can apparently cure anything in the world.

Of course I question it, but I hand wave it away as a gameplay element. I bring up the plasma cutter thing because it is LITERALLY the medical cutter attached to his flashlight. They wouldn't have made that clear if they didn't want it to demonstrate his engineering ability. The other weapons having flashlights is for gameplay.
Here's a question. They have the singleplayer as Isaac and then the co-op, which is Isaac and boring guy. In singleplayer, boring guy takes a different path. So is there an alternate version of the singleplayer with boring guy? Also debating if I should get this or not because even if I do, what do I get out of it? A game that probably won't be scary and no future support because all they do is release DLC for consoles?

Any idiot can follow orders like "plug that in" or "flip that switch". Y'see there's this thing called the willing suspension of disbelief. People will believe something so the story keeps rolling, they take it as it's told because why not? When a character is told to be something but then constantly does the opposite or shows extreme negligence it becomes increasingly hard for people to suspend their dibelief. "Why does that engineer spend all his time flicking switches and killing space zombies? Shouldn't he be doing his job and fixing the ship?" You can't just say someone is something and then have them act like something completely different. 'Here's Isaac Clarke, he's the top chef at a leading Paris resteraunt, play as him killing space zombies on the Ishimura.' No one's gonna believe that, why would he be killing space zombies? He should be cooking meals for french sweethearts. He did make the plasma cutter. He took a flashlight and a medical tissue laser, rigged them together to form a gun, wired it so pressing the flashlight button triggered the laser, and disabled the safety measures. Meaning he could fire the laser at full power as long as he had spare plasma energy to slap into the flashlight. Or did you think doctors walked around with handheld tissue lasers that fire at range?

How do you know he disabled the safety, and wired the flashlight out of thin air? Its like you are talking out of your ass. That shit happens because its just a game thing that doesnt really have an explanation and its stupid to nitpick at shit like that. Its like why are everyones limbs in Dead Space held on by string and why can Isaac literally punch a fucking dead persons head off in 1 hit. Why do all the limbs seem to come of clean at the legs and arms on every single person? Isaac probably should have been a surgen because he can just stomp someones leg off quick and clean.

The devs have said the reason they included that scene was to show his proficiency as an engineer.

The entire point of him making the plasma cutter was to show him being an engineer, he doesn't need to fucking give you a step by step guide on how to build your own plasma cutter. I'm using common fucking sense. A medical laser would never be activated by hand, so Isaac needs to rewire it, a medical laser only needs to make minute, precision cuts, they also wouldn't drain a giant ass plasma battery in 4 seconds so Isaac must have removed it's safety limits. Removing the safety limits would aslo allow him to fire without having a computer program telling the laser when its safe or not safe to cut. You don't need every single aspect of every action explained to you you fucking clod.

It's called common sense, understanding how rational humans design things, such as not having medical equipment that can mutilate groups of people as soon as any random nut gets his hands on it.

Had no idea make believe medical equipment was common sense.
