The reason people hate the COD series recently (Cod4-5 and up) is because of the majority of the people who play it, pre-teens and early teens.
If they played Battlefield everyone would hate on Battlefield. I don't agree with Activison money grabbing, but I still don't agree with the hate towards minors. If they play this series of games, you know how to avoid (most) of them. Hell I'm going to buy the CODs just because I have owned every single one so far. The only thing I play is the single player for the story, that's about it, I let visitors on Multiplayer to keep them entertained.

Actually, I hate call of duty because it's not fun to run around in circles and get shot in the back all the time. I could care less who plays it because I either play without a headset or in a party with friends.

honestly the modern warfare storyline is pretty good
the black ops story was fucking incredible but the game was overshadowed by a completely broken PC port, shitty dedicated servers and no mods
I'm still excited for this, for the story alone, but if the multiplayer is similar to mw2 (lol) it's going to be fun if not balanced

Both games will probably suck and will never live up to there predecessors, such as BF2, COD2 and COD4.

I'm skipping over MW3 altogether and just waiting to see what the next game for 2012 is. I'll wait for September, but I can't find anything redeeming about mw3 right now. All of the other CoD games have had nice differences between installments; Black Ops and MW2 are completely different games, WaW and MW2 are different, etc. MW3, though, looks exactly like MW2.
I don't see why everyone says cod4 was a masterpiece but mw2 was horrible, I thought mw2 was the best of the whole series all things considered
best scripted events, best weapon variety, most [b]im[/b]balanced-yet-interesting (broken) multiplayer
obviously it's far from perfect but I still play it from time to time

I dunno about overhyped, but I am waiting for it's release and seeing people disappointed about it not living up to Battlefield 2 as much as they had hoped. It still looks fun but a lot of people are going to be crushed when they get their hands on it.

MW3 is more of a MW2 DLC than a new game. But not all CoD games are copycats plastered into a new box. I think BO and MW2 are greatly different games, for instance.
Also, you realize most of the people that love CoD and Battlefield were exposed to it thanks to huge marketing campaigns? I mean, the core communities - which are huge - have been around for ages, but CoD would not have the console foundation it does today without heavy marketing and support on the Xbox 360. Battlefield was never a game casual players were interested in either until it was really championed by EA onto consoles.
