Were still just talking about a game. Go ahead and release a game that focuses on American atrocities in WW2 in a overblown manner, hell I would get pissed at such misinformation, but the game wouldn't get banned over here and people would just choose not to buy it.
COH2 isn't banned in Russia either, 1C willingly stopped selling it there.
not really, and nowhere to the same degree as CoH2.
If they really did try to push this game to be "realistic" you bet it was just for marketing purposes. Especially considering the game's developers are in a bit of a dire situation in terms of development and publishing.
Did these guys raise a stink when they were given just a clip of ammo, no gun, and marched to storm Stalingrad in CoD?
Not only was this years ago, for all I know they could have raised a stink. The major difference between CoD and CoH2 though (speaking purely on the original CoD's Russian campaign) is that there was one or two historically inaccurate tropes. From what I hear of CoH2 it practically oozes myths about the war and Soviet military policy. Add to this the fact that CoH2 was explicitly marketed on the back of authenticity and realism (as opposed to CoD's quasi-historical blockbuster appeal) and you can see why skewed perspectives would exist.
If there is a actual idiot who thinks the shit in CoH2 is all true, there is something more wrong with that person then the game.
No game developer ever can or should get away with this shit. There are some people who will play this game who don't know, and they will take what the devs said for truth and they will only know something that is not true. You cannot blame someone who really doesn't know better and it is the developers fault if they act as if it was true. And for everything I've seen and heard thus far, they are acting as if it was true. You need to be absolutely clear when you turn facts with fiction, not half-ass it and hope the people who play it know better.
COH2 isn't banned in Russia either, 1C willingly stopped selling it there.
Well shit, I misread like a tard, and look they did do what I said. But when you think about this, this is just the way propaganda works. Exaggerate the bad sides of the enemy and only show yourself in the most honorable light. I don't think the nazi thing is that far fetched at all.
Just like its retarded to take all your facts from wikipedia, its just as retarded to take facts from a video game but never read up anywhere else.
It really doesn't matter if it's dumb or not, you just can't blame them for taking your word. If they think it's true, why the fuck would they need to go look it up elsewhere?

Oh thank god I thought this thread was going to turn into "omfg fuck the Russians they are insanely stupid" and "fuck Russia, in my high school history class I learned that Russia did these things so wth is their problem" again, thank god it's not this time, it's really ridiculous how people actually believe that shit.
While the Soviet Union didn't do stuff like this, it is still dumb to call Relic Nazi sympathizers like a bunch of people do.
The Russians actually did some of it. But shit like them having very few guns in the battle of Stalingrad, or having an entire battalion/company/unit, whatever it was, executed for saving your CO is just stupid [editline]6th August 2013[/editline]
The Russians actually did some of it.
This guy explains pretty well why russians hate CoH2
Wasn't this the same video that was on here a week ago and was proven that most of his "facts" were mainly hearsay and that he was mostly talking out of his ass?
Add to this the fact that CoH2 was explicitly marketed on the back of authenticity and realism (as opposed to CoD's quasi-historical blockbuster appeal) and you can see why skewed perspectives would exist.
Maybe I didn't pay enough attention but I didn't see them touting anything but the game mechanics as "realistic". Where do they claim that the story is totally realistic? I genuinely want to know.
Russians should just deal with it, Germans and Japanese have been dealing with that shit longer. You don't see them getting pissy about games showing how their historic nationals have commited atrocities/war crimes and other horrible shit or how US/British/Russian campaigns always show how millions of Germans and Japanese are being gutted, executed, blown up, drowned in the most horrible ways.
now I can't speak about Japan, but modern Germany condemned Hitler, the Nazis and the war, but Russia did not condemn the USSR, there's still a lot of nostalgia about it (believe it or not, but the older generations genuinely prefered communism to what it is now), and they did not condemn the millions of lives that were lost protecting their motherland from the Nazi threat, they see WW2 as a time of heroism and patriotism, not a time of genocide and oppression, and the defenders of their homeland being shown like a bunch of evil, incompetent and generally stupid warmongers is unthinkably disrespectful towards the men and women that gave their lives fighting unthinkable evil
INSPIRED BY Absolutely nowhere in that image does it say "100% accurate" or anything of the like.
does it change the fact that it's disrespectful as hell?
part of a big ad campaign basically saying that coh2 is super real
It says "Real Story" though so, yeah, I don't know.
does it change the fact that it's disrespectful as hell?
A little bit, yeah. Depends on the person and how much they give a shit that the story that (as far as I know) didn't claim to be 100% accurate wasn't 100% accurate. Are the Russians within their right to get all up in a tiff? Of course. If someone made a WW1 game and all the Canadian troops ate the flesh of their enemies or some shit we'd be a little pissed too but at the end of the day so long as they didn't claim that it is 100% accurate then there isn't really a big issue. [editline]6th August 2013[/editline]
It says "Real Story" though so, yeah, I don't know.
"Real" in this context is basically just a buzz word. Right under that it says "inspired by" which means that their story was inspired by the stories of the people they talked to. To me those are the key words: inspired by

How dare you, a Canadian, try to lessen the blow these Russians must suffer to a shitty RTS campaign. At my high school, they showed a movie called "The Devil's Arithmetic". If I were take that as my sole visual resource of the holocaust, that the school told me was accurate, then Nazis act like evil villains all the time, polish people sound like borat, and gandlaf is a Jew.
Dude, Russians are like suuuuuuper sensitive people. How dare you, a Canadian, try to lessen the blow these Russians must suffer to a shitty RTS campaign.
Sorry.
In a few of the dev diaries they say that it's historically accurate.
Mind providing these?
Here's one:
Here's one:
Not once in that video did they say that the game was a 1:1 depiction of what really happened. Hell, they even say they changed stuff for the sake of fun! They claim they tried to get shit like sounds, looks, and locations as authentic as possible, however they don't claim 100% authenticity story wise in this video, not even once. They all but spell out that they changed real operations based on what really happened and what would make for fun gameplay.
The thing I don't understand is why did they focus so much on the Russians being incompetent or downright evil on the game? I mean you have to burn your own soldiers in one mission for no reason, you send unarmed troops into machinegun fire in the hopes that a couple will get through. I'm not saying the Soviets didn't do fucked up shit, but the game is called Company of Heroes, not Company of Incompetent Mass Murderers. The first game didn't focus on Americans killing unarmed Germans or soldiers boing insane from being forced to run into machinegun fire and mortar shelling.
Controversy over nothing, get the fuck over it it's a video game.
There's still someone wrong when the Russians are portrayed as worse than the Nazis.
They literally were.
No one raises issues about stereotypical, cartoonish, all around unfounded and offensive portrayals of Germans in historical media. If they aren't baby-murdering psychopaths and cannibals they're cowards, deserters, or traitors willing to murder their own countrymen. Sadly we live in a climate where pointing things like this out is tantamount to German nationalism which is apparently tantamount to being not only a Nazi, but a murderer yourself.
They literally were.
No they weren't, Relic are just a bunch of idiots.
