No. It's just default everything.

I love you.
People still have that set to automatically detect? Everyone I know has been disabling that from the get-go since the early XP days... oh well I guess if it helps people. I've found that Steam just takes ages due to thrashing the shit out of your hdd's - an SSD would probably be the best upgrade to speed Steam up.
Its a default windows setting? A ssd would not change much with the lag between switching tabs as it is more of a operation between the program and the os

Yeah, it's really stupid because absolutely no home user in the world has a proxy server to access the internet.
If they have one set up, then they would have the knowledge to configure it in Windows anyway to have it always go to the right server instead of trusting auto.
In corporate environments, that setting would be enforced through group policy. So there is literally no reason to have auto-detect ticked by default.

yell at microsoft to make it default to off but it probably wont happen unless you know someone on the windows team and even then its unlikely

open up control panel and search "internet options"
My only question is who the fuck at Microsoft decided it would be a good idea to make it try and auto detect every time something tries to connect out?
It's an Internet connection. Unless you unplug it or change wireless networks, it's not going to fucking change.

Automatic when first connected to the Internet, then no more. That's the proper way to do it.

Damn why did I never know of this sooner. Now my title is irrelevant :v:
I turned mine off when I first got Windows however there has been a distinct lack of women in my life.
Mine has always been turned off and I still find steam sluggish but nothing to really complain about. Damn I can see where some people are coming from with the complaints now if its that bad.
You're going to fuck up my wallet...?
Steam was always pretty fast for me before, but now it is literally "Click. Wait half of a second. Steam."
I thought I was the only one...
It's weird tbh. I'd expect Valve to get pissed at how much faster Origin starts up, which is VERY much faster...
Origin? ...And I first thought EA only cared about forceful marketing & money and not about quality.
It's funny, mine is ticked off, but when installing games my internet just randomly loses connection for no reason.
Doesn't help that bigger games take a while to finish.
I knew something was up when this was two pages long for a client update.
Glad I read the thread.

I doubt it's actually a problem with Windows, all that option should cover is trying to get proxy settings when doing DHCP, it's much more likely that the embedded WebKit copy in Steam is doing something funny.

You'd be surprised the number of computers I troubleshoot in the course of my job that start out with no Internet (Chrome, IE, FF, you name it), and then by only unticking that box, it all works again.
It definitely is a Windows issue.

I am the not that only one who has this problem.
Sometimes it goes up to 7 mb for a good time but some days if I even TRY to download, my entire Internet goes down into the pitt of doom.
For anyone having issues figuring this out, because I was mildly confused, Windows Key + R, type "inetcpl.cpl" without the quotations, go to "Connections" tab, click "LAN Settings" at the bottom, untick the automatically detect, bam you're golden.
