all this hype for prey 2 but we'll never truly know if it would have been a good or bad game, at this point
With an ending like that, you pretty much have an in-universe explanation for New Game+.
Plot twist: You weren't Native American all along.
OR being able to simply continue after you beat it.
There's a Mario webcomic like that.

Dammit Colossal you fucking people.
The Prey we got was good, but i still think i would have preferred this.
That plot twist seems incredibly unoriginal, hell, both Rick & Morty AND Adventure Time had plots in this same vein. I do understand being frustrated about the game never coming to fruition... but not sure why this twist is getting any praise it is pretty cliche.
I would have preferred both.
I'm just frustrated that the original Prey ended with such a massive cliffhanger, when Prey 2 was announced i was disappointing that they didn't go for a direct-sequel, i'm EVEN MORE disappointed that i'll be left with this cliffhanger anyway...

In fact, they sorta reused that plot point to a lesser extent in the new one.

I was upset we weren't getting Prey 2, but I'm more upset that the script wasn't released so I could at least read what was supposed to happen.

I don't think you realize when this game was supposed to come out.

2011-2012 in case no one wants to look it up or knew about it beforehand.

They had something similarish, that doesn't really mean it isn't pretty original. I mean there's pretty much no such thing as an entirely 100% original idea that isn't based off of anything, because literally every idea anyone ever gets is based off of their experiences.
This does something neat with the idea, and really this idea is fucking perfect for a video game it provides an actual in-universe explanation for the common video game concept of reloading a save. Something the first Prey tried to do as well, just this time in a much more interesting way.
Also there's the whole thing about Prey 2 being cancelled in 2011 and starting development years before that. You know, years before either of those episodes existed? Not that either are anywhere near the first time the idea has been explored before, anyway.
Oh well

but those came after so what are you even thinking?

To be fair this one is about 1,500 years earlier. And this one is about 120 years earlier. It's cool but it's not new.
I would have preferred both.
I agree. Arkane's Prey is pretty cool and I'm glad it exists, but nothing beats the allure of being a space cowboy in an open-world setting.
Prey 2 had such a cool concept and gameplay potential it's a real same it didn't come to light.
With an ending like that, you pretty much have an in-universe explanation for New Game+.
Also gives an opportunity to unlock a special ending by beating the game without ever dying since that could imply you're still the original dude and not a clone.

Seeing as it spent five years in development without the devs being able to put out as little as one actually playable demo that wasn't scripted out the ass, I have doubts if it could have been good at all.
There is a point in a development cycle where it becomes clear developers are just wasting time or struggle with a lost cause. Half a decade seems like a good breaking point - just looking through games known for being stuck in development hell shows that five to six years on a single project is the tipping point where diminishing returns go in full effect.
Reminder that even the original Prey from 2006 was the result of a development hell clusterfuck being mercy-killed and promptly handed over to a different developer who released a drastically different iteration after a final five years cycle.
The original 2006 game is still something special for me. In the mid 2000s I was finally able to save up enough cash to get my first "decent" PC, and Prey was one of the games that ran remarkably well on what would now be considered a Potato. I was bummed to see the sequel get shitcanned. Especially since the idea of running around an open world Blade Runner style Alien city chasing bounties is something I desperately wanted to play.
I still like watching that E3 trailer from time to time.
Doesn't this support the idea that bounties would be mostly randomized then? Rather have structured and well-written characters to hunt like Stranger's Wrath.
Unless they had a lot of crazy systems and a shit ton of variety within the randomization that'd be stale as hell after one playthrough.

In response to all the dumbs and comments, I just want to point out these were two specific examples I could think of immediately and link to. If you think this idea was somehow more original when Prey 2 was in development, or that I was implying these two shows were the first to do it you're completely misunderstanding my post. Ah well.

I don't think this idea was ever used in first person shooters, that's what matters
It was sorta used in BioShock: Infinite, though. [sp]Except then you're not a clone but another Booker DeWitt from a parallel universe.[/sp]
Also Penumbra's conclusion has you potentially [sp]warping back to the beginning of the first game.[/sp]
