128 maxplayers!

Garry has set the maxplayer limit to 128. Jesus christ. Have fun trying to fill your server with %10 of the gmod population.

There are servers with 50+ concurrent players already, it won’t be that hard to fill 128.

I’d like to see the player limit removed, there is no real reason a limit should exist.

If you have the hardware, you should be able to have maximum game.

You’ve got to have an extremely good connection to be able to do that.

Around 50Mbps is not exactly hard to get and I certainly wouldn’t call it “extremely good”

Not every area on earth is limited to a piddly 512Kbps up like most of the united states.

According to your graph you would need only 30Mbps (this is wrong) which is attainable even at home in the us (FiOS, 35Mbps) and most “dedicated server” providers already give you 100Mbps.

If you live in a country that doesn’t have ass-backwards internet (Japan, Sweden, South Korea, Etc) you can get 1Gbps, at your home.

i got ~3 upload and 20-40 download

I had an invite to this server, but i didn’t have gmod installed because i reinstalled steam.

I can see servers with 127 fake players spreading lua ‘virii’.

And other servers crashing due to trying to pack 128 people in without the hardware to handle it. Only a few and far between will actually use this new limit.

so, what happens when maxrate is lowered? low fps or sumthing?

No. The prediction becomes wrong and movement seems jerky

It would be awesome to have a war with 128 people. I wonder how long the server would survive with that many players!

We’re a very long ways off from being able to properly run 128 slot servers. If srcds was multi-threaded this would not be the case. If we could distribute srcds properly over 8 or even 4 cores and have it fully utilize them it would be fine, but for now it’s not possible.

Source engine’s net code isn’t the best one also, because it was never designed for this.

You’re right, perhaps in the future game servers will be better optimized for a multicore environment. We should start seeing it soon, games like MAG are the future.

I assume an i7 overclocked would be up to the task, even though you can only use one core.

Anyone who has actually tried doing it care to post?
I’d like to know the specs, bandwidth and how much of what was being used.
