3DS Max problem - 'Attach' removes smoothing of the newly attached object

This is becoming quite fustrating, as I can’t figure out why this is happening. Right now, I’m trying to merge together that Adam Jensen model for Garry’s Mod, however, every time I try and attach the limbs and such, the smoothing is removed from that object. Here’s an example:

Actually, it turns out now that loading my saves of this project unsmooths everything apart from the body, even though they were smoothed at save. The reason I have to attach everything is that the model decompiles as seperate body parts, which isn’t what I need.

Has anyone got any ideas as how I can fix these smoothing ‘resets’?

Honestly, the best thing to do is just to weld the excess vertexes together and use the autosmooth feature under the editable mesh pane. Use the element sub-object selection and select the mesh to regenerate the normals.

Alternatively, if you’re super picky about keeping the normals, you could export all the separate pieces (eg, an .obj) and then reimport as a single mesh.

For future reference, auto-smooth did the job.
