Bones help?

Hey guys, I finally decided to get my lazy ass up and modeling. I have created a small model that i would like to export out from Blender into the SFM. Yes, i have installed the script to allow exporting models into Source SDK, but what i really want to know is how you apply bones to the character to get the character poseable in SFM. (like in SFM it would say l_hand or r_foot) Do I have to make the bones in Blender and exporting the model will still have the bone movements in SFM? Or do I have to make them in SDK?

It depends on what you’re making, if You’re making Human models then Valve have already provided us with a good set up, Go to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps*your_name*\sourcesdk_content\hl2\modelsrc\humans_sdk\Male_sdk

and import Male_06_reference.smd, you can just delete the model and you’ll have the skeleton remain.

Then just weight paint your model to the bones and you’re good to go model wise, however, some QC tweaking should be done so you have all the stock animations in there and your bones work naturally.

It’s daunting but just copy paste it, Most of it’s generated anyway.
You’ll see there’s a reference there called “Physmodel” in there, Go back to where you imported the Male_06 and copy “Ragdoll.smd” and paste it to where ever your project folder is copy it again and rename the 2nd one to “physmodel.smd”

so you should have 3 .SMD files now, all in your own folder:

Yourmodel.smd
Ragdoll.smd
Physmodel.smd

Then compile and see how you go.
