Changing the weapon the player takes out when he spawns?

I want the player to be holding something other than his physgun when he spawns. I’ve seen gamemodes do this before but I don’t know how to do it and I am guessing it has to do with editing a certain file in the gamemode’s settings. I do not want a custom LUA script to do this for me, I am trying to figure out what file I should edit if I want to get this effect, and where in the file I can find my target.
