Crash on startup

no main menu except shows the g-man traffic cone loading screen then tells me Hl2.exe has stopped working.
HL2 and HL2 ep2 work fine

Laptops are horrible for gaming.

All I can think of is setting the DirectX level to 8.

(Enter this in startup options) :

-dxlevel8

I contacted Steam Support

and they said this:

Still the same thing happens after following instructions.

It’s -dxlevel 7
Notice the space.
Probably why it wasn’t working. Try it again WITH the space.

I don’t know why the background wants to to disappear so much.
