So hello everyone, I’ve been told that Facepunch is a good community to show off map design, so here I am with my latest map:

DE_HIMEJI_CASTLE (Workshop version)

de_himeji_castle (GameBanana link) is a map created by me for the GameBanana ‘Famous Landmarks’ contest. I choose this castle based on high demand for asian themes by many people (not only on GameBanana but also outside of the contest) and therefor I decided to create this magnificent castle, of which I had never heard of its existence ever before (despite it being apparantly very famous).

From Wikipedia:

Himeji Castle (姫路城 Himeji-jō?) is a hilltop Japanese castle complex located in Himeji, in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. The castle is regarded as the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture, comprising a network of 83 buildings with advanced defensive systems from the feudal period. The castle is frequently known as Hakuro-jō (“White Egret Castle”) or Shirasagi-jō (“White Heron Castle”) because of its brilliant white exterior and supposed resemblance to a bird taking flight.

So the map is originally built for Bomb Defusal scenario. I have had plently of feedback already and I know that the current layout is hardly ideal for DE scenarios. As such, I will be creating different versions of this map, one for DE which will be a heavily modified version with less dead ends and bombzones on ground levels (to get rid of the overloaded vertical gameplay). An AR version will also be created and will contain all floors of the castle, as well as acces to the roofs.

Some trivia:

  • The map has been built in a timespan of 35 days, including the creation of all textures, props and brushwork

  • The map has been created to honour the magnificense of the Himeji Castle and the Japanese Culture. I do not intend any harm towards either the castle, its visitors or its inhabitants.

  • The castle is publicly visitable in Himeji in Japan.

  • I would like to thanks all people that aided in the development of this map. Thank you very much!

  • If Valve or the community wishes to add this to the official maps, please say so in the comments section or vote the map with a thumb up! Many thanks!

At last, the license on GameBanana applies as the original one for the map, so if you are interested in the license, you can read it there.
I hope that the people here will enjoy the map, and to finish the topic here, I will be giving a gallery:

Sorry for the grainy quality, they are links from the workshop version, so that’s the reason why the quality is lower (resized versions)

Enjoy this final version!

Holy shit, awesome!

Now if only it could be ported to Gmod…

I’m making a CS:S version of this map when the final version will be there. I’m not sure if it then could be ported, but if so feel free to do. I will probably look into this myself, but since maps can be put in GMOD straight from Source games I think there would be nothing really left to do for me except to release that css version.

A CSS version would work just fine. Once again, amazing map, and I eagerly await the port.

Now that’s a pretty stylish map; someone could do some interesting machinima in it.

I was amazed until I saw the inside of the castle.

Get some custom oriental lamps made, don’t use shitty HL2 lamps and horribly ugly tube lights. Also, don’t use those metal girder textures and change out that ladder for a wooden ladder model.

Wow, this looks spectacular! Nice work! I would love to see this in CS:S/Gmod.

Nitpicky, but I can’t disagree here.

In fact that was the plan x) but due to the deadline I was forced to some quick decisions. I’ll look into that for future updates. It was hard to decide the lamps for the inside as on almost none of the interior reference pictures I could actually see any light at all. Also the castle is a war protected fortress from the feudal period, and the typical stylish lamps are in fact not used in the castle at all. They did however, in other castles, and because many people did ask for such lamps, perhaps I could put the reality aside for some fantasy

Thanks for the feedback gigabyte, and thanks for the warming comments to all!

It looks beautiful, really great job!

A nighttime version of the castle would be great as well, I’m already thinking of some poses involving Ninjas…

Something like this would look nice attached to the walls:,0&op_sharpen=1&op_usm=0.9,0.5,0,0[/thumb]

It’d need a darker wood color though.

And something like this for the hanging ceiling lamps:

Though I’d make the wood part a bit longer to cover the white paper hanging below.

It makes sense that castles didn’t have fixed lights because no electricity. They just carried lanterns everywhere they went.

I see. There are almost no lamps attached to the walls so I’ll just use hanging oriented lamps. I’ll diverse them a bit with 2-3 different versions, although the same wood color in any case. I’ll let you know how it fares and if I get one done I’ll send a picture  thanks for the reference photo, makes more sense now

I think for corridors like here:

You should use wall lamps, maybe placed on the opposite wall wood beams from those spotlights on the wall. Having one lamp every other beam would look nice.

For the larger areas, it’d make sense to use hanging lamps.

That wood is too massive and unsupported.

You mean the middle beam or all of them? Because there is one floor in Himeji Castle where there are such beams on the ceiling, also only supported by hanging walls on the pillars :expressionless:

I agree in any case that the middle one (where the lamp hangs) is ridicilous xD

BTW Giga I’m working on the lamps at this moment, they are almost done. I don’t have much time this weekend though, I’m gonna try to work on the map as much as I can to finish it.

Textures mismatch sadly.

Could you specify where? It could eventually help me determine another texture.

For those who did not know, I received first place for my Himeji Castle on Gamebanana

I’m getting assistence of Will2K and numerous other persons and mappers to get the map on a competitive level! Also, I will be adding lots of suggested details that would not break the gameplay, I will be having a completely new and fully working skybox that is high-res and not pixelated.

Furthermore, I did manage to make a decent oriental lamp model for replacing a few of the lamps (I cannot, unfortunatly, replace all of them as some are simply equally existent in Japan such as the ceiling lamps on the iron covers at the underground walkways) so that’s gonna bring up a change too

At last, for the Defusal version I will be cutting off the 3rd, 4th and 5th floor to eliminate overly available vertical gameplay and bring the A site to the groundfloor for better horizontal gameplay.

When the version is done, I will be updating this thread.

Congratulations on your win!

yaaaay! this map will be brilliant with some reconstruction! happy to hear you are redoing the layout to emphasize gameplay! looking forward to see it done! you got my vote!
