Dedicated server question

I was wondering if you had to run CRCDS(gmod) on another computer or can you run it on the same computer that you are playing on?

It is possible, but highly advised against due to the performance hit you’ll encounter.

In performance hit do you mean internet connection for others or system usage?

There is no performance hit if you have good hardware and the right knowledge to configure the server correctly - I’ve run a full 32 slot Garry’s Mod server in the past on the same computer I played on for several months with no issues.

Yes you can use the same computer. Only difference is you’ll have to use your internal IP:Port, while if it was on a PC outside your network, you would use the external IP:Port.

Resource wise it depends on the computer you run it on :stuck_out_tongue: (like the other guys have said). It will affect the computer badly if e.g. it was a single core PC with only 1GB of RAM e.t.c. But apart from that, if your garrysmod game runs smoothly on the PC you want to run the server on, then I think running the server program as well wouldn’t affect anything.

I think the worst thing affected would be your internet connection. So just watch out for that :stuck_out_tongue:

For a basic 10 slot server, it is recommended you have at least 500kbps upload speed. You can check your bandwidth at http://www.speedtest.net

Cross that out… heres a better one.

That answer about the upload speed was based on a guide about Counterstrike Source  Not me.

That’s a key bit

You do realize that Garry’s Mod is on the OB engine and css is not right?.

What difference does that make if it’s on the HL2 or OB engine? As far as I am aware the OB engine takes up similar resources to that of the CS:S engine. Both are source based games.

**HL2:**2004
**OB:**2007-2008
:v:

Google it. Otherwise, simple answer: OB is more demanding then the CSS engine.

Well yer. But it depends on what he’s running  E.g. Sandbox or Dark RP I would say roughly can get up to maybe 200MB of RAM when filled with loads of stuff(some CPU power).

But simpler more contained gamemodes won’t use up even 100MB when all the player spaces are used.

So for Garry’s Mod it seems more like “OB Engine Demands + Power for gamemode”.

A percentage of the users that run home dedicated servers are running on reduced hardware, so that’s what I based on.
