Frame rates plummeting, possible connection with sound settings

Very suddenly two or three days ago my Gmod began randomly plummeting frame wise. I don’t mean from 60 to 15, I’m talking 60 frames to one frame every five seconds.

With some preliminary troubleshooting I realized that sometimes Gmod would run correctly. At night, I switch from 5.1 surround sound to 2 speakers using Realteck HD Audio Manager to ensure I don’t lose sound when using headphones.

I loaded up Gmod today and experienced show stopping frame drops, and tried changing the in game audio from 5.1 to 2 speakers. This greatly improved frames, and became quasi playable. I exited my music program in the background (Windows Media Player, not sure which version) which further improved frames. After a few minutes and some prop spawns, the inherit instability this issue seems to have fostered got the best of Gmod, and forced it to close despite my alterations to the sound settings.

The last thing I worked on in Gmod is in this thread, the issue happened a week or so after this fix was working perfectly, which leads me to believe it is not related. Here is the related thread.
