Getting a ripped model into a T-pose

I’ve been asked to rig Katey Greene from Dead Rising 2 as part of a request. She was ripped from the game in a sitting position, so I’ve been trying to straighten the legs as a start. The trouble is that I get half-way through the leg, but a jumble of vertices is still left behind.

Is there any easier way to make a T-pose aside from trying to either rig a couple of bones or moving all of the vertices manually? I’ve tried both, but I end up with the same result.
