Let it be known that I’ve never released a map before! This would be my first map and biggest learning experience. HDR, color correction, skybox creation, optimization… It’s all here. However, I’m very new to this and I would greatly appreciate constructive criticism.
[release][h2]gm_exhibition…[/h2] …is a map with two very similar sides. The layout calls for two teams to go head to head in balanced combat. I am not that great at describing the visual aspects of a map so I’ll leave that to the screenshots.

I’m hoping to create different versions of the map for different gamemodes. Feel free to make requests or take the .vmf into your own hands to work as you please. At the moment, only gm_exhibition is available for Sandbox, but I’m planning on cleaning it up a bit and make it more bare for use as a build map. I left the level of detail (tons of physic props) in there just in case someone wanted to keep it for whatever they’re planning on using the map for.

As far as i’m concerned there are three types of maps.

  1. Get my attention for being poor. Usually warrent a few comments, 90% of the time that blows into a full out war, people get banned etc.
  2. Average map, not worth commenting on either way.
  3. Descent map, OP deserves a comment to say how good he has done.

And you are definatly in the 3 catagory. I haven’t played the map, i’m looking at the screens. The lighting is nice, areas have enough clutter to seem occupied. It looks like a place that might actually exist. You have a lot of talent, so keep going :slight_smile:

tbh, it looks tiny

although seeing as this is a deathmatch map, it’s acceptable in proportions. not bad for your first map

Added build version in which most props are removed! Working on Fortwars V2 map.

Fixed.

Removing the link to the build version of the map, will recompile without these entities tonight. I don’t know how I missed 'em.

Wait consider using -propstaticlighting or disabling the shadows on those junk piles (in the last pic) otherwise their underside is the darkest void imaginable.

The map itself looks quite nice but that fog is just awful, try to make it match the skybox a bit more.

This lighting is really nice, have you got any colour correction?

Indeed. The fog was to make it look like kicked up dirt/dust in the playing area. :stuck_out_tongue:

When I want anything like that, I use large func_dustclouds. I use them for mist, to create this:

But if you made them brown, it’d look like dust.

Whenever I tried to do that it looked giant and really poor-looking, though. At least when I made it brown. Perhaps I did it wrong.

Untested on an actual Fortwars V2 server, but go crazy.

I examined the vmf for fun. Turned off all visgroups except for world brushes. Found things that should be func_detailed but aren’t.

I guess it’s fine for this map if it manages to compile despite having this kind of problems. Might be a good thing to remember in your future maps, though.

Other than the technical Hammer stuff, I think this map is quite good. The lowered lightmap scales make the shadows really fancy. (especially noticeable here http://wauterboi.com/steam/exhibition/releasepics/gm_exhibition0155.jpg) There’s a decent amount of detail in most places. Sometimes the ground looks a bit bare, however.
