Half-Life 2: Lost Coast map Hammer problems.

So I’m trying to modify the HL2: Lost Coast map, mainly for sandbox purposes. I’m trying to Customize it by doing things like removing the giant cannon from the monastery and the fence from the balcony area in the monastery. The problem I am having is that it takes forever to compile. So I wait, and wait, and wait. And when it’s finally finished compiling, I try to load the map in game and I get the error “hl2.exe has stopped working.” I’ve tried this many times, and every time I try, I get the error. I don’t want to keep waiting this long when it will just keep crashing. I might also need to mention that I am Under the Source SDK configuration for Half-Life 2 (NOT Lost Coast) for Source Engine 2009, as I could not find the .fgd file anywhere for Lost Coast, and I figured the engines were similar enough, but I could be wrong. Can anyone get me some help or advice? Thanks.

Can you compile other complex maps fine?

Well, seeing as how complex the Lost Coast map is, I have never tried to compile other maps like this. So I want to say no, but I can’t be completely sure. The maps I had been working on (which I’d given up on for the most part) were pretty basic (E.G. little to no lighting, fullbright, not much detail, incomplete, etc.). So for now, I suppose the answer is no. Could it have to do with the .fgd file being for HL2 and not Lost Coast?

No, The .fgd only contains entity information etc. Lost Coast was made to be kind of like a tech demo of either Episode 1 or 2, Don’t remember so if it’s anything related to the engine which i kind of doubt I suppose it could be because of it. Try using a newer engine version, If it’s for Gmod you could just use like tf2 or episode 2. I think what was so new about lost coast was the HDR that didn’t exist in HL2 so that could be it.

If switching version doesn’t help then I suppose your computer can’t handle compiling maps of this caliber or you’re not patient enough. It will say that it’s stopped working but it can still be running in the background. Check processes in the task manager.

Did they ship a vmf with lost coast or did you decompile the map? If the last one’s the case then you’re having issue because mostly all optimization have been removed.

Well it would not be at all a surprise to me if it was because my computer cannot handle it; (4 GB RAM; Mobile Intel ® 4 series express Chipset Familly). Yes, I loath my Graphics Chip. :suicide:
And I usually end the hl2.exe process in Task Manager when crashes, and it does say under Applications “Not Responding” each time I go to end it.

As for the .vmf, I did decompile it myself; I didn’t check to see if it was shipped with Lost Coast. Where might I find the .vmf file if it was shipped with it? Would it be in ‘lostcoast content.gcf’, or under the lostcoast directory?

If it didn’t come with a vmf you most likely aren’t going to find one. Decompiling frequently leaves you with brush errors and the like, so it isn’t weird that this is occurring.

If you provide a compile log that would help a lot.
