Hammer Error "Windows can't find the file specified"

I have run into this error while working on a map and i can’t seem to fix it, i have been on google and everything people suggest doesn’t work. I have also had a look at the thread already on here about it but nothing works in that thread either!

ill post the compile log here to let you guys look over if your willing to help

Code tags.
text[ /code] For future reference. Still spreadin the word. :v:

Anyway, as for helping you, I’m pretty sure that you can’t have spaces in your map name. Maybe not the folder either. Oh yes, and these:

“Found a displacement edge abutting multiple other edges.
Warning: overflowed 141 displacement corner-neighbor lists.Finding lightmap sample positions…”

and

“Displacement 412 has bad geometry near 960.00 -320.00 -36.24
Can’t compile displacement physics, exiting. Texture is NATURE/SNOWFLOOR003A”

You’ve got a messed up displacement. Load the pointfile in Hammer (alt+p), or simply find the displacement that’s at those coordinates and delete it.

Displacement 412 has bad geometry near 960.00 -320.00 -36.24
Can’t compile displacement physics, exiting. Texture is NATURE/SNOWFLOOR003A

Edit: Haw people rating me late for posting before above poster edited his.

I tried Go to Brush but it said displacements 412 and 141 don’t exist, if i press alt + p it says there are no errors.

I just recompiled after deleting the offending geometry and its decided to crash hl2.exe whenever i walk on the ground. Do i need any command lines such as -novirtualmesh when i compile?

Um, is your ground entirely made out of displacements? Because if it is you may need to redo it entirely. If you want more advice, I’d recommend posting your new compile log. Don’t forget

code tags!

I’m betting your displacements are power of 4.

I’m not sure why it happens, but source (I think it’s source) struggle with advanced geometry. Something like that. I’m pretty sure I’m competely wrong.

Just select all your displacements, click on the face tool thing and make the displacements poer of 3. You won’t lose much detail, unless the map is huge.

This, is nonsense.

Ignore this. (Apart from the

bit)

No, it is not. There can be a scenario where something you did to you displacement messed it up too bad to be fixed. Im not sure exactly what parameters it would have to meet, but I’m fairly certain that you can make too many vertices or make one part drastically far apart from all the others or something on one displacement and make it have “bad geometry” even on a power of three. Now, I’m not going to preach that as fact because I’m not 100% sure if it’s true, but I’m going to stick to it until you can definitively prove me otherwise.

So there.

He is correct, he doesn’t need to redo it entirely, only the displacement causing the error, at the co-ords given.

You are confusing several different issues, one of which being displacements can cause a crash in the OB engine if the vertex density is too great. This can be caused by power 4 displacements on small displacements, or even heavily manipulated power 3 displacements.

The error here is a separate one.

Ok, fair enough, but when I said that he’d have to redo the entire ground, I now realize that I worded that wrong and would like to state that I meant to say that he should redo the entire ground displacement that was causing the crashing problem (and only that one), which I’d assume would be the displacement giving the error you referred to. And the

that you talked about at the end was the problem I was thinking of, but I was saying that I was thinking that there were other possible reasons.

Idiot, you have a space in file name.
New VMF
It’s not supposed to have spaces in file name.

(User was banned for this post ("Flaming" - Terrenteller))

Yeah. And you don’t have to be such a dick about it. You can’t blame him for not knowing that.

I am using the power of 4 for my displacements and my whole map is smaller displacements grouped, i did this because i’m going for varied terrain, ill try re making the terrain later and post back with results. Thanks for all your help guys.

I have made maps before with a space in the name and it worked.

I doubt it. Never have a space in your mapname.

You can have spaces in your map name, but if you try to load it in HL2 or episode 2 via

map example map

It will say something like

map example does not exist

or

map example name is incorrect

There’s still no reason to have it.

Of course you CAN have it, it’s just dumb.

This guy disagrees.

I wouldn’t say it’s dumb, because the majority of mappers on this forum are making them for GMod, which has no problem with spaces in names.

However, it is “tidier” and more convenient to replace spaces with under scores.

I still can’t see why anyone would use a space, for any reason at all

Because they don’t know not to?

Can you honestly not imagine any realistic scenario in which someone would use a space in a map name?

Considering I started with Hammer 3.4, no. I can’t see why anyone would ever use a space in their mapname.

Really? You’re obviously not trying too hard. In any case where you have multiple words in a map title, anyone would want to use a space, because no one typeslikethis or_this. You use spaces between words. If you didn’t know any better, you’d probably use a space. And is Hammer 3.4 just a certain update of Hammer? Because if it is I’m not sure how that’s relevant to what you were saying.
