I am pretty sure facepunch considers linux 2nd class. That’s too bad. I rent and run a server but I cant get on at all. I want to say I am not mad about it because this is alpha and all that fucking bullshit, but I am getting more pissed off as each day passes. I don’t even think they test the linux build at all. They can’t be bothered.

I hate to jump on this train, but it’s an alpha. The final version of the game will support linux beautifully I’m sure, but for now it’s a moving target and I totally expect some builds to not work. The people saying it hasn’t worked in 18 months or whatever are straight up incorrect. Most of the time it works.

The rest of the time boot Windows and play. You can’t seriously tell me you’re a PC gamer without a functioning Windows install?

Seriously man? Taking the bullied victim route as an OS that 2% of the community is using? All linux users (being the savvy techies that they are) should automatically assume linux support will be patchy at best in an ALPHA state game. It’s low priority.

oh please, you sought out the game, and bought it from a page that has “ALPHA ACCESS” all over it. don’t try and act like they came to your house, sold you on something you had no interest in and stole your wallet.

you bought a product in development. at the moment it doesn’t work on your setup, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use windows to play, or that it will never work on linux. it’s on the backburner because it’s too difficult to bugfix and develop on multiple platforms at once.

It looks like a patch was pushed several hours ago. I haven’t tested it myself, but the twitter feed said it was for the Linux client problem.

So fixed within a few days. Boohoo we Linux users are so hard done by.

No offense intended to Linux users (I don’t wish to belittle you), but because Linux users are in the minority, Its logical to give more attention to fixing problems that affect a larger number of players.

I call BS on this. I bought an early access game that was supposed to be supported in linux. No where does it state that the support is “Hopefully it compiles!”, which has at times been the amount if support they have given.

When I see games that support any platform I would assume, at a minimum, when issues arise there would be a box they test against to fix it. This hasn’t been the case for linux.

And it is not an issue of an update that broke linux, then a day or 2 later it is fixed. Sometimes yes, but other times there has been weeks between issue and fix. That isn’t active support.

The same argument could be used for support of another language. Rust says it supports other languages, but if you bought a copy and only spoke french, but the french version isn’t actually in french… then it doesn’t REALLY support french. Just saying “early access” is a cop-out. It should’t say it supports something it doesn’t.

It should be clearly stated clearly that the support for other platforms are not fully supported. Then, and only then, you can make the argument that we knew what we were buying into.

It does support Linux. It’s working now and works most of the time, just sometimes takes a while to get it working. Hell there’s been updated that’s broken the game for a lot of users who can’t even launch it on windows until an update was released. Just because it supports Linux doesn’t mean it’ll always work and they will instantly update it if it doesn’t. The same way if a feature breaks in game, it lists it as a feature but temporarily it isn’t. Why? Because it’s early access.

You bought it knowing it was not anywhere near finished. This means there will be times where it flat out doesn’t work. Doesn’t mean they don’t support Linux it just means it’s low on their priority list. Why spend time fixing something that effects the minority rather than using that time fixing something that effects the majority? Stop being so entitled demanding they fix it because you choose to use a different OS than what the game is primarily destined for.

And no early access isn’t a cop out excuse, it’s just something entitled people forget is a legitimate reason for something not working.

yeah, look… they have fucked up with the steam store information. the specs no longer apply, and linux support WAS stated when both of us purchased the game. linux players have a right to be pissed about that. but it is an alpha, and shit changes, including OS support and spec requirements. it sucks, but it is inferred.

i just get sick and tired of people demanding that the devs should focus on something that affects the minority over pushing ahead with active development. especially when a linux user is likely to have a win partition/vm anyway for the other programs out there don’t support linux.

it’s a an early segfault that makes the game unstartable unless the unity launcher is a game, i.e. zero pixels presented, with no log what it’s doing, not even an MDMP.

dropping advertised os support mid-development is really scummy and grounds for a refund per steam policy if im not mistaken
oxeye did something like this internally though they’re open about it and are good with refunds

i wasn’t debating why it’s not working on Linux, or how bad the problems preventing it running are. i was stating that the number of people affected are the minority, so it doesn’t make sense (IMO) to prioritize it; especially if it could cause delays to development for the majority.

although it IS a jerk thing to temporarily stop supporting an OS, it’s an equally stupid thing to keep banging your head on the “it should support linux” wall when you can just run a Win partition/VM until it is rectified. Unless the team explicitly say “we will never support Linux”, it’s just a matter of time and priorities. and it’s alpha access, not a completed game. everybody signed up on the basis that they understood that ANYTHING could change; that’s all that is happening here.

He’s just mad because, while Rust was down, the number of programs in the world supporting Linux went from like 4 to 3.

Yeah, FP has dropped the ball with Linux users. According to the devblogs, though, they’re working to rectify that error. It’ll work out in the end but, as frustrating as this probably sounds, you’ll just have to give it a little more time. This is absolutely the most actively developed Alpha I’ve ever been a part of. I seriously doubt they’ll leave a segment of their community out in the cold forever.

I don’t get it. I spent most of the day playing Rust in Linux. It works fine. What the hell are you doing wrong should be the question, because they are supporting Linux, and the client does in fact work.
