Light from Hammer to SFM

Hello, I started doing some simple maps in Hammer for using them in SFM. So they are not for playing, just background.
First I made a box, hollow it, texture and added some static_props.
Then I added a simple light, brightness 800 just in case and for testing.
Compiled the maps, no errors at all and started SFM. Everything went fine except lightning. I’ve been trying different settings (checking HDR, putting different lights, deleting the props, mat_fullbright 0 in the console, etc) but none of them worked.
Any idea? Thanks in advance

I didn’t read the part where you said it wasn’t working.

What texture do you have set outside of the map? It might be because you need a player spawn inside of the “playable” area.

I also don’t recommend skewing the outside of the level as shown in the image. Hammer may have some issues if its not on the grid for all the sides.

I made a new map using your recomendations -info_player_start, straight box, etc- and with these exporting settings.
I followed every step on making a basic room and recompiled the props just in case. Still nothing sadly…

And in SFM :

Did you remember to run HDR? Try placing a light_spot and see what happens?

Yes, tried adding light_spot and light_directional.
I also checked HDR and compiled in Full Compile - HDR Only. I’m using Hammer 4.1 Build 6262.
I read at forums.steampowered some guy who had this same issue and he was using Hammer from TF2, mine is SourceFilmmaker\game\bin\hammer.exe and I tried to open it from steam too.

I dont really know what else can I do.

I don’t have filmmaker installed. Have you tried verifying the cache?

This is showing you have no light data in your map.

What happens if you take the light out of the model? I think that might be your problem.

Ok, everytime I compile the map it always shows 0.0% on both LDR and HDR lightdata. I moved the lights out of the model but same results. I followed this tutorial https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Getting_Started step by step and created a new map just in case.

Sorry for the trouble but I’m beginning to think this is not fixable!

Usually for sfm to allow for HDR lighting, you must have one light on the map. Try making a box outside the map with an interior and put a simple light_static inside it.

I don’t mean to hijack the thread, but I was trying to create a dark map (i.e. with no lights whatsoever)? Because, as I understand it, if I do not add some sort of lights, then the HDR settings of the map will not allow the map to function without disabling lighting.

However, when I tried that method of putting a box outside the map with a light in it, even though the small light room is lit up, the rest of the map is completely pitch black (even when I disable lighting in SFM, or try to add a SFM light).

Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Its because the box has no entities saying whats inside of it or whats outside.

Well, the only entity the map is the light that I put into the outside box. The interior of the outside box is lit up fine. But I cannot light up the rest of the map, no matter what I try.

I’m not sure whats going on here but I will try to give a explanation:

When hammer compiles a map to bsp it performs many different methods of optimization. As a result any rooms that don’t have any dynamic entities in them are not written at all, and become part of the void! Incredibly complex scenes might not write at all because they only consist of prop statics, lights and default brushes, all of which are not dynamic entities.

For a room (any by room I mean any space completely enclosed in world geometry, usually there is only one of these “rooms” per map) to write you could just add a simple prop_physics to each one and it will make sure that that vbsp does not ignore it.

I think the issue you were having is that possibility there is a leak in your map somewhere. Glad to see you got it fixed, although you don’t have to have the other box that large :slight_smile:
