map displacement optimization

im making my first environment map. im used to making indoor maps. but ive very rarely worked with outdoors. well im working on a mod with my friend and half of it is in a forest. and i am using displacements (dur) and im not sure how to optimize it for preformance. i use 512 x 512 brushes with x4 for subdividing (i think its called subdivision im more used to models) and im not sure that’s the best for preformance. any tips? or ways to cut down on fps strain?

Best for performance would be something like 1024 with 3 subdivisions, with it still looking nice.
