Maps will not run in Hammer

Hey there everyone. I’m having some issues with Hammer, in that I can design maps with it, but when I go to test the map from Hammer, a popup appears (A windows popup), saying…

SteamStartup() failed: SteamStartup(0xf,0x000000000023DDC0) failed with error 1: Failed create pipe: 6, Win32 Error 6 “The handle is invalid.”

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Source SDK, deleting the sourcesdk folder and running Source SDK again, restarting Source SDK, restarting my computer, Resetting Game Configurations, Refresh SDK Content, to no avail. Here is the compile log:

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!

I don’t see any errors in the compile log, aside from the error you posted which means steam isn’t running, but you said you’ve restarted steam since, so I’m not sure. Hold on, I’m going to look through again.

[editline]06:31PM[/editline]

It compiled every part of the map, but it won’t launch it after the compilation it seems. The map successfully compiled though.

Try this, open up the game that you compiled the map for, go bring up the console, type in “map test_room” (without quotations). By looking at your compile log, I’m assuming the maps’ name is test_room, so just replace that with whatever future map’s you might have.

To enable the developer console in game, open up the options, go to the keyboard tab, hit advanced at the bottom, check off enable developer console, and hit the “~” key.

Hope this helps.

Ah, that does make the map run, yes. Thank you very much, at least now I can see it to play and test.

However, this was also a ‘I still want it to work for the sake of working’. If anyone else knows why it’s doing this, please don’t hesitate to post–thanks.

I can’t find your error on google. I can understand why you want it to work, but being discouraged out of mapping seriously sucks, so I had to at least post a work around. Keep in mind, to get that error to not pop up after compiling, just make sure you uncheck “launch game when finished”.

This error looks like your computer forgets that steam is running, or a firewall is blocking hammer from launching other steam games. I’m not to certain, so someone else will have to give this a go.

If you have a secondary firewall or antivirus or something, try temporarily stopping it. Perhaps it is stopping Hammer from connecting to Steam.

you have set hammer to start the map automatically after the compile right?
I don’t know why, but many times it doesn’t work.

It’s much easier to just have the game you are mapping for opened in windowed mode in the background and just alt+tab to it.

Yeah, setting it to automatically launch the map after the compile is really wonky. There doesn’t seem to be anything actually wrong with your map, you just have to load it up manually.

Sometimes this feature just doesn’t work, it’s very unstable. Nothing bad comes from it though, just launch your map manually.

Used to work flawlessly back in the days of GoldSRC

can’t load skybox file skybox/sky_day01_01 to build the default cubemap!
no such variable “$hdrbasetexture” for material “skybox/sky_day01_01rt”

Both found on http://www.interlopers.net/errors/

Neither of those are problems. All it means is that the skybox isn’t located in the game/mod directory, so it won’t make temp cubemaps.

Okie dokie, after reading your posts it seems that the launcher is buggy and not an efficient way to do it anyhow. And to those wondering, I don’t have a secondary firewall, but thank you for that attempted solution. I’ll just do it the manual way, and I’m glad to know you guys couldn’t find anything wrong with my map. I suppose that means I’m doing something right–I -am- trying to learn both mapping AND good mapping -practice- at the same time.

Thanks everyone, and I might post some mapping questions in a thread about my first project: a three-story building (basement, main floor, 2nd floor, which is coming along nicely!)
