Modelling with 3DS Max - Multiple textures?

First of all; when I export a model to SMD in 3DS Max, does the model need to be a single mesh?
Because I need to use different materials on different parts of my model. Can I apply different materials with an ambient bitmap file with the same name as the material on the different parts or is it more complicated than that?

If you select individual polygons and drop the material on it, the material will be assigned to these polygons.

And the compiled model will use that material on those faces accordingly?

You can also use as Multi/Sub-Object material if you choose, but Haxxer’s method works just fine.
