Player model eyes stuck facing one direction only

Hey!

So this is kind of a weird and unexpected issue that I have not been able to find anyone else having on Google.
I’m trying to add a head from a player model in one of my addons (Steam Workshop::[Outfitter] ODST Natalie) to one of the Sci-Fi Citizens player models. (Steam Workshop::Sci-Fi Citizens Playermodels)

And this is the results I’ve been getting:

As you can see in the gif above, everything looks fine. Except for when you turn around. The eyes remain facing in one direction only. Everything else looks to be perfectly fine.

This was my workflow:

  1. I download both addons using a Workshop downloaded from the internet. Which gave me a .zip with the contents. So I didn’t have to unpack the .gma file.

  2. I loaded up a Sci-Fi Citizen in Blender. And simply removed the head. That was easy enough, as the head were already its own separate mesh.

  3. And I delete all the bones from the neck and up on the armature.

  4. I then imported my own model. Deleting everything from the neck down. Once again easy enough, as everything were also its own mesh.

  5. Then on the armature, I deleted from Spine-4 and everything else below it.

  6. I then merged both skeletons. Keeping the Sci-Fi citizen as the base. And I parented the neck bone from the new head to the Spine-4.

  7. From there I updated some model references from the old armature, to the new armature.

  8. Then I exported everything as .smd.

  9. For the .cq file, I started with the Sci-Fi Citizen as the base. And deleted a bunch of stuff the new head didn’t have. Such as the vta for the face. And all the flex stuff with it.
    And I copied over the head stuff from the other .cq file. Such as the Ponytail hair jiggle bone.
    And the eye attachments.

This is the current .cq file I’m using to compile the model with. And it looks perfectly fine when I preview the model in HLMV. It’s just in-game where the eyes get stuck.

It’s worth noting, that it uses the exact same eye texture or the original model with the head. And when I try to switch to that model in-game. The eyes are fine.

So I don’t know what I’m missing here.
I’m happy to add any more information if I missed to include anything. As I’m not exactly sure where the issue lies.

Hi @Norway174 , I’m by no means an expert on the subject, but I’ve made a player model myself with working eyes so I thought I’d throw in my thoughts.
Are your “new” eyes by any chance in another position than the original eyes? It might just be a tiny bit but that can mess up the QC code for the eyes, unless you’ve updated everything of course =)
I used THIS tutorial to get my eyes to work, and they worked flawless after following through the tutorial. I did use a 2-3 attempts to get it all right in the QC, but it’s working now =)

I assume you’re referring to this part of the qc file:

$eyeposition 0 0 70

That line is exactly the same with “0 0 70” on both the other qc files for both the sci-fi citizens and my addon.
While both the old models was extracted with Crowbar. And I think Crowbar generated the qc files.

Is there a possibility Crowbar generated them wrong?
I haven’t had too much experience with Crowbar or modding Gmod in general. So I wouldn’t really know.

I have no idea what was wrong, but I made some changes to qc file.

Added these two lines:

	flexcontroller eyes range -45 45 eyes_updown
	flexcontroller eyes range -45 45 eyes_rightleft

and changed this line

to this

So this is the full new working sq file, for anyone wondering who stumble over this thread in the future.
Just had to add the flexcontrollers. And change the eyes from “rotate” to “absolute”. (I guess Crowbar just uses rotate when you decompile a model?)
