render.DrawBeam with a sprite material

Whenever I try to draw a beam with a sprite material, its alpha shows as black. So to fix this, I put “$spriterendermode” 7 into the .vmt, but then it is too translucent. I have the color set to Color(255,255,255,255), but it is so translucent that I can barely see it, even though some of it should be clearly visible. Any ideas?
