SFM:need advice for making prop bones match model bones in blender (gmod equivalent:bonemerging)

So I need to make some separate models for a character. I decided not to use bodygroups as they need to visibly detach from the model. How would I set this up in blender where I would use the model as a reference, make the prop (in this case an armored boot) and make a point where it would attach to, lets say the foot bone?
