Skeleton Player Model

Since Source Engine has bone merging capabilities, wouldn’t it be possible to use a ValveBiped player model skeleton, with no triangles attached, as a player model? Then you could bone merge a regular player model to that model.

The purpose of this would to allow yourself to create new player model animations without having to recompile all the other player models. Does this sound like a good idea?

You can’t compile bones that aren’t attached to vertices in Source however nothing is stopping you from using a transparent texture

I’ve done just this a few years ago, the problems I ran into were mostly hitboxes. Only the base “skeleton” player model would have the valid hitboxes. This would lead to players shooting some part of the bone merged model which might not register. There might have been a few other problems, but I can’t remember at the moment.

Are there any working examples? I’m going to be trying to compile a model for myself and see how well that works. Will give updates soon.

I got a model compiled with just the skeleton and an idle sequence, but when I would print all 70 of the bone names they would be called INVALIDBONE. Bonemerging didn’t help either.

Was there something I did wrong?

Adding the bonemerge effect makes the model not show up. Here’s what I’m running in console:
