Starting out with modeling (and NPCs)

I had a couple of questions I was unsure of. What I’d like to do is edit a model I had, and then turn it into an npc, just to get familiar.

I do have 3dsMax, and from what I understand, the model must be rigged to the valve skeleton in order to work, and I was going to follow a tutorial I found on the Valve developer community to do it. Specifically, these are the models I wanted to use:

Of course I won’t release them unless Bloocobalt lets me. What I need to know, is could someone show me a link to a good NPC creation tutorial? And as far as the modeling part goes, am I missing any major steps to make it work in game?
