Several hours of work and endless hours of reading allowed me to construct this steam locomotive for display. This is a 4-8-4 Northern Class steam locomotive (4-8-4 is a Whyte notation for wheel arrangements; 4 leading wheels, 8 driving wheels, 4 trailing wheels.) The locomotives were well suited for passenger service, and there are other 4-8-4s still running such as the Daylight Southern #4449 and Union Pacific’s #844.

The train is over 280 props large, anything that could be parented is, and it does run. The train can only run on Gm_Trainconstruct2 as it derails on the ridiculously tight turns on any other map. It is thruster powered (no need at all to make this more complicated than it is.) The driving pistons move, and the train is capable of some speed. If I had larger train wheels I could make this even faster.

As a railfan, I looked at the title of this thread and thought “if this thing sucks, he’s gonna know it.”

My first reaction to the first pic was “wha buh duh daa durr dah duh…drool”

Then I watched the video. In HD. Fullscreen. On a 42" HDTV.

And died and went to Heaven.

In other words…HOLY FUCKING SHIT ON A STICK WITH A CHERRY ON TOP THAT IS FUCKING AWESOME! NIIICE work!

Chaos wanted me to point this out:

Southern Pacific GS-4 #4449 and Union Pacific FEF-3 #844.

Yeah. The Daylight was one of Southern Pacific’s premier passenger trains, not the railroad itself. SP #4449 is the only surviving GS-4. UP #844 isn’t the only surviving FEF-3, but it is the only one still running. UP keeps FEF-3 #836 as parts for #844. UP also maintains Challenger (4-6-6-4) #3985, the world’s largest operational steam locomotive.
