The Wall - Live In GMod - a new, multimedia experience in Garry's Mod

EINS! ZWEI! DREI! HAMMER!
So you, thought you, might like to, go to the show? Pink Floyd’s legendary concert, film and stage show has entertained music fans for over thirty years, and now it arrives on Source for the first time, bigger and better than ever. Introducing…

The what?
Decades ago, Pink Floyd were the 1970’s most successful band, having released a multitude of albums worldwide. After the success of their 1974 hit The Dark Side of the Moon, group leader Roger Waters became disillusionned with the unruly crowds at the band’s stage shows, and imagined a wall seperating him and the audience. From this initial idea came The Wall. The double album was released in 1979 to immediate success, and later spawned a hit tour in 1980, an epic partially animated motion picture in 1982, an enormous mega-concert in Berlin in 1990, and Roger Waters’ current stage show today. Our project is the latest adaptaiton of the concept.

You say it’s multimedia, what do you mean?
The project consists of several seperate multimedia parts:

  • a map, gm_thewall, consisting of an enormous stadium adapted for a Wall show, with full controls for setpieces and more

  • a live GMod concert performance featuring special effects, lighting, pyrotechnics and more, set on the map
    [t]http://i.imgur.com/y0WmA.png[/t]
  • a film, Pink Floyd - The Wall - In GMod, made with a mix of filmed footage from the concert, GMod animation and Source Filmmaker.

Who’s doing it?
Me, along with Drsalvador, DainBramageStudios, and others.

What’s the map got in it?
Set in an enormous stadium in the heart of Los Angeles, gm_thewall is the biggest virtual concert map in Garry’s Mod yet. Some of the many features in this map include…

  • The titular 30 foot wall, composed of 70 individual bricks, which can be spawned individually or all at once
  • Stage and backstage areas, boasting controls for all of the features mentioned
  • Setpieces lovingly recreated from the live performances including a fold-out hotel room, a flying helicopter and a crash-landing Stuka dive bomber
  • Hi-fidelity projected images on an enormous circular screen, ranging from the Marching Hammers to Gerald Scarfe’s famous animated characters
  • A wide variety of seating, from high up in the stands to down low, inches away from the action
  • An exhibit of Pink Floyd history and memorabilia in the lobby, including famous album covers, the artwork of Gerald Scarfe, and a memorial to Syd Barrett

Let’s have a look at it
OK, have some screenshots. (Keep in mind that these are still WIP, and are likely to change.)

Any video footage?
Sure, have a trailer!

When will it all be finished?
No fixed date as of yet, but expect it to be within the next couple of months, maybe even weeks. If not that, then simply “when it’s done”.

What about details for the live show?
All the dates, times and other details will be coming soon, so watch this space!

Anything about the film?
It’s in the planning and preproduction stages, so there isn’t much yet, but let’s just say there may be a few surprises in store.

Incredible! Where else can I find out some more info?

Where can I download the map?
Er, it isn’t out yet.
Oh
Don’t worry - when it is, I will post a link here.*

(Disclaimer: This thread is not an advertisement for any servers or anything like that, it’s simply our way to make our project reach out to a wider audience out of our already-existing thread in the Mapping section (which is tailored more towards the map than the overall project), like the gm_construct_13 thread or the GMod 13 trailer thread. If this is in the wrong section, any mods are free to move it to the appropriate place.)*

Well, have fun when the map does come out, and enjoy the film! Feel free to post questions in this thread about the map, concert or movie. Make sure to look out for more news about the project as well!

There will, of course, be defences against Charples jumping up onto the stage and PHX phalluses being hurled at the actors?

of course.

if they do it, we’ll have 'em up against the wall

[sub][sub]i’m not entirely kidding but there are going to be measures to prevent unauthorized prop spawning/physgun usage[/sub][/sub]

I swear to god I have seen this before somewhere… Have you posted this thread previously? Like a year or so?

there was a thread a few months ago for the map but we decided to make a seperate thread for the project as a whole since it’s scaled up rather massively in size

This seems rather interesting.

Only a few months ago? Seems like ages ago. Either way, as a huge Pink Floyd fan I’ll be following this project, looking forward to seeing it develop.

Tomorrow, it begins.

Pink mask exploitable(VERY BIG)

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/38136991/specialmask.png

large quantities of hype

I saw Roger Waters perform this not that long ago in Toronto. I can only imagine how awesome it would be if I’d ever seen the Pink Floyd one.

The Division Bell.

So, About 5 or so months ago, The Wall Live was just a fun map made by chippers based on my suggestion that someone should make a Wall map with a fold-out hotel room built in, And it spiralled out from there.

That was when it was fun, that was when we were all still friends. But even then, we were being slowly pulled apart. The Wall Live ballooned in size, to the extent that we had over a year’s worth of work to do.

Lately i cut it back by shelving a few parts of the project we had planned, But it was still vastly too big for such a small team. And me, in my delusional state of obsession with this project, failed to notice this at the time.

This project has destroyed my friendship with a lot of people. And that’s why I’m killing it now.

I love this project so much, But it’s slowly throttling my friendships like a barbed wire tendril around the stem of a flower.

It’s not the project itself that’s causing this, it’s my inability to creatively see things any other way than my own. And because of this inability to do such a thing, i cannot let The Wall Live continue. I’m sorry, but no, chippers isn’t having any fun anymore, Dain wasn’t having any fun, Geogzm wasn’t. and i certaintly am not. It’s horrible.

To anyone i have alienated or exploded at over my sheer inability to have human decency due to my concrete-set views on this project. I apologise.

To everyone who was looking forward to the live show. I am incredibly sorry, but i hope you understand the angle i am coming from. I will have a word with chippers, and try and see if he can finish up and release the map any time soon. But until then. I bid you adieu.

  • Drsalvador

Awh, really, you can’t let other people take over from you?

I wouldn’t want to bequeath such a divisionary project to anyone. Time has shown that almost anything to do with The Wall divides people, ironically.

Heh, and here I was gonna write up a big list of things to improve on the map.

Edited by DainBramageStudios and directed by Drsalvador, this was one of the projections planned to be shown during the Wall Live In GMod event.

I love you.

Oh my god D: This deserves to go on haha
