Hey, I’m Monkeys. The creator and designer of the LifePunch.net gamemodes. Alongside my buddy, the extremely skilled programmer KingofBeast developer behind the original TheD3vine servers, we’ve been working on a new apocalyptic survival gamemode for Garry’s Mod. **I know. “Not another one!” I won’t pretend the idea is genius or never seen before, but I can promise you our ridiculous amount of challenges to overcome and features to master, along with our strict philosophy of “you’re not likely to survive” **will be the source of our innovation. There will be **no spoon feeding. **You’re thirsty and about to die of dehydration? You can’t walk up to a well and drink and all is good. The water is shitty, you’ll get sick. You might not be thirsty anymore, but now you can’t stop vomiting.
There Was Hope is an upcoming Garry’s Mod gamemode planned for public release late 2015 or earlier. You’ll be challenged to survive in an extremely harsh post-apocalyptic environment where civilization has been wiped out. Resources will be scarce while hunger, thirst and sickness aplenty. In a world where survival is almost impossible, only the fittest can survive, barely. Will you be a survivor, or a victim to the wasteland?
Every new feature we add to the game aims to enhance the realism without compromising the fun. As of yet, our playtests have been very successful and There Was Hope is shaping up to be an amazing experience for all those who love a gritty, no spoon feeding and unforgiving survival simulation.
We don’t aim to make There Was Hope a casual gamemode. It’s going to be intense. You and everyone else will continuously be struggling for your survival. I’ve always felt like most survival games were easy to manage and mostly a thing of progression - I wanted to break that cycle. I’m trying to make this a true survival experience. You’ll always be hungry, scraping around for food. You’ll always be thirsty, desperate not to drink the dirty water or to get enough resources to make a water purifier - boiling the water is also an option, but that won’t make the water any cleaner, just less sickening.
**PVE **will be a thing - hunting down creatures for food will be a must. PVP will also be a thing, however, attacking other players may not be worth it. Weapons won’t be easy to make and they will have condition like all the other tools. After enough use, they will become useless and require repair. Also, smacking someone with a makeshift nailed plank isn’t likely to kill them. It’s likely to make them bleed and get infected, but so will you if they hit back and can you really afford infection and bleeding on top of your crippling hunger, thirst and desperation? Cooperation will appeal a lot more.
STATS AND ILLNESSES
In There Was Hope, not only will you have to keep an eye on your well being, your hunger and thirst, but you will get tired with time. You’ll need to sleep or pass out. You’ll go out of breath from running, shouting, fighting or working. There are dozens of different combinations of woes you can suffer of; bleeding, infection, fractures, nausea… there are illnesses, hypothermia, cholera, etc. All these conditions will be represented visually (blurry/wobbly vision for nausea, shaky and frigid vision for hypothermia, etc.)
The gamemode will feature an intuitive inventory system allowing you to pick up, organize, drop and use items. Different items have different amounts of encumbrance and you can only carry so many things, although different pieces of clothing can give you extra pockets or pouches to put things in.
At the time being, there are over 100 different items to carry, none of which are useless. Many, many more to come. The sheer variety of loot for you to find is bound to keep you occupied.
There are currently dozens of different recipes that can be produced, with many more to come. Whether tools, weapons, food or buildable walls and decorations (yessir!). The crafting system is complex yet intuitive.
Getting the resources to build shelter will not be easy. Most existing constructions have been irradiated, the only spots of potability you’ll find are in nature. However, perhaps by teaming up with someone, you might eventually manage to make yourself a shelter and start storing goodies in storage containers you’ve crafted - maybe for trading? Maybe simply for charity and to help your fellow humans survive?
Because not everyone is cut out for this.
In order to ensure an intelligent distribution of loot and effect across the world, we’ve designed a system we call the SmartPoints. SmartPoints will allow us to dynamically dictate to the gamemode where loot can appear, what type of loot can appear there (generic stuff? food? weapons? tools? materials? containers? medicine? etc.), what effects a player can get from entering an area, where certain dynamic entities should appear (harvestable trees, rocks, bushes, etc)… there are currently over 500 such SmartPoints scattered across the map, with a lot more to come.
Sometimes, fresh meat just ups the spirit.
This is a very small preview of what’s to come and it’s hard to experience There Was Hope through gameplay videos. Hopefully you’re as excited to play it as we are to make it.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, if you did and good luck out there.
P.S: I suck at making pretty threads on FacePunch, sorry. Pls forgive me.
