Train Wreck (Current WIP Name)

I’ve posted some pictures in the WIP thread, but this project has been gaining some momentum these past few weeks. I plan on expanding his map on to another, to make a “short mod”.
This is my first map that will: involve puzzles, be focused on an outdoors environment, and have something to do with trains. First, you start out on a train, somewhere deep in an Eastern European forest. The train is derailed by boulders left on the tracks as an attempt to block of the abandoned depot and XCCR. You find a generator building that powers the depot and surrounding areas, but it hasn’t been touched in 40+ years. It is now your duty to find the tools to start this up, and work your way up to a workshop via an elevator and catwalks to find a crowbar. This crowbar is used to break the hatch on an exhaust pipe that leads to an underground complex (I still have to think this part out). But for now, some pictures!

  • 2/12/11 -Not much to report for this week, other than I finished the workshop and fixed a lot of small problems. Now, the final step, scripting, will take only a few hours. Completion for this map is about 93%.

No, but, is this a little comic, or is it really a map, which has a moving train?

I saw the name and I thought it was a thread about pot. But then I looked and I was dissapointed.

Then I saw the pictures and wasn’t dissapointed anymore.

Looks really nice. The atmosphere is near perfect though it looks like you might have a problem with fog as your (what I presume is a 3D)skybox is completly grayed out? I will definatly get :slight_smile:

It’s actually a part of the map, you watch the train go on its way for about 12 seconds to get an idea of the setting. The title also appears at this time.

I may use this as music for when the player wakes up after the crash, to add to the confusion of their surroundings.

And this will be used when the player descends to the underground complex via the exhaust pipe.

Nice work, also good music choice.

From what I see in the pics its pretty well done. My only issue is the fog. Its too abrupt (it goes from no fog to fully faded too quickly). The color of it is too light. The sky is usually lighter than the land is mainly because our atmosphere has the ability to bounce all sorts of light around. Land however is made up of objects that do not reflect as well as well as having a darker overall set of colors.

Yeah, that’s been an issue from the start. Once I find a skybox with fog in it, or even create a custom one, I will adjust it to make it more fitting.

This is the first time I’ve run into such a bizarre error.

Bumping again, with more content. I’m getting closer to scripting out the generator starting, and attaining the crowbar. As of now I’m about 85% done with this map alone.

Lighting could use some work.

I REALLY don’t like maps closed up by cliffs like that. More so in other maps than this one, the lighting, fog, and displacements help hide the cliffs a bit.

Is it too bright, too dark, or uneven distribution? I’ve noticed something a little strange, but you may see it better than I.

Okay you see how you have all these lights, but its still red/dark it doesn’t make that much sense tbh.

I am also having issues with some props, as you can see they get this weird pink reflection. I’m not sure what it is or how to fix it.

Build some cubemaps

After building them, they still give off that weird reflection. If I have to, I can switch to a different prop.
