Using the finger posing architecture to manipulate non-human models?

I had a thought a good while back when finger posing was the brand new shit, and I’m curious as to whether anything has been developed like it since then. Is it possible to use the finger posing architecture to manipulate parts of things that aren’t hands? For instance, could one rig a pistol model in such a way that the thumb control corresponded to the slide, allowing it to move back and forth? Could pieces of models like triggers, doors, or other moving parts be mapped to the finger posing system, or is the finger posing system limited to a very specific set of riggings?
