UVmapping - Hell on earth

So, I started modeling today. After a few rather easy tutorials on how to model an item, i started to work on some items that i plan to animate for use inside of Garry’s Mod. My first task was some robo-legs.
Now, I have the robo-legs done in my modeling program (I use maya 2012) But i can’t figure out how to do UV mapping for the life of me. Even when i get somewehre, it seems like a ludicrously hard task that there must be a solution to.

Can anyone show me a good tutorial for UVmapping this thing? Or a tool? Or something that doesn’t make it so INSANELY hard to do?
