What is SSBumping

So ya what the title says what is ssbumping and why do valve use it in the orange box engine ? and what effect does it got ?

It’s Valve’s way of implementing parallax without actually using parallax. It’s basically a self shadowing bump map.

And unfortunately, it does not work on models. As far as I know.

Neither does ambient occlusion, even though it was said to be supported in Episode 1 and up.
