Back when I was in school there was a kid there that was from Moldova that had left Moldova with his parents. He was pretty outgoing but ultimately never really liked speaking about the country or his experiences. Ended up being curious about it and it seems Moldova basically was (and still is to a lesser degree) the Balkans punching bag, pretty sad in the grand scheme of things
I had a classmate from Moldova, they used to tell us stories of the things they'd have to do to make do - for instance, the whole business about salting meat to preserve it since some people didn't have refrigerators
